- Q: I bought 12 x 12 ceramic tile from Lowe‘s branded as SURFACE SOURCE with a PEI rating 4. I bought each tile for $0.58 each. I want to use the tile for the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry room and living room. The tile was made in Mexico. I think the tile was being discontinued at Lowe‘s. Thus, I think that is why the price was so low. Did I make a mistake? The tile looks good and feels good so I do not see a problem with. I need an honest opinion.

- Q: Should i tile right to the sub floor. Or do i leave room for a baseboard? or do i put the baseboards over top of the tile and glue them on?
- You first need to place tile backer board on the sub floor. This step prevents the floor from flexing which will crack the tile in due time. But, to answer your question. Put the tile down first, then place the baseboards up against the wall over the tile. Set tiles 1/4 away from the walls. Do not leave any grout to harden which is not level to the tile near the walls or the baseboards will not lay flat against the tile. Good Luck
- Q: What‘s the difference between tile mastic tile adhesive? I was told to paint the wall w/paint primer first then use tile adhesive rather than tile mastic to apply tiles on damaged green board around my jaccuzzi tub for a quick fix. The green paper peeled off when removing the old tile exposing the brown cardboard stuff.
- Mastic is a glue, an adhesive. It is used for wall tile, but not in a shower. Thinset is a portland cement based product that is used on floor tile and for any large wall tile application or if a wall tile is going to be used in a high water area like a shower. I answered your second question on your other post.
- Q: Anyone know how much I should expect to pay to have a professional install ceramic tile flooring? The prep work has been done. The tile is 12 x 12, there‘s about 90 sq ft of floor (concrete... sealed). I‘ve purchased the materials (tile, thinset, grout). I just want to know how much to expect to pay for labor. Is $5.00 per sq ft. too much? That‘s the quote I was given. Thanks for any help.
- Sometimes it is not only how many square feet of tile is required to put down, the formula also must take into consideration the difficulty of the installation. The difficulty is proportional to the number of cuts that are required to be performed and weather these cuts are straight or curved. There are also other expenses. 1.Soundness of sub floor. If poorly supported the tile will crack. 2.Does installation require removal of base molding and its replacement following the installation? 3.Moving of the appliances/furniture and so on. Finally, now days and roughly, the installer wants to make $260-400 per day. Tiling is never 1 day job since application of grout is required at least 24h following the installation. So if the job is straight forward 3.5 - 4.5 per square feet is a good price on the average. Considering it is with prep $5.00 sounds like Ok. New York City or LA for example may cost a bit more. - No vinegar will not hurt your ceramic tile. You may want to rinse it off if you use to much vinegar.
- Q: I am currently removing old cork tiles from the floor of my house. They are stuck down to the cement and as I‘m chiselling them up I‘m being left with a lot of glue residue with fragments of the cork too. Any tips on easy removal of the old tiles, but more importantly removing the glue? We are replacing them with new ceramic floor tiles. I was thinking maybe a heat gun and a scraper to clean it up but Dad has suggested a grinder! Any experiences with fast and easy removal of residue? I‘ve still got a room of cork to remove so if there‘s a better way than hammer and chisel I‘d love to hear about it!
- well i know this was very stupid of me but it worked i took pait revomer and just poored it all over the place and it sunk into the cork and then it was much easier to get get up with a chisell it worked! i was so fuserated that i was up to trying ANYTHING. or do it the right way...... Most cork tiled surfaces are used for flooring. Cover furniture and fittings before starting. Look for a loose tile, or a tile in a central position. Lever the tile carefully using a scraper. This should now give access to the surface under the tiling. Gently push the scraper under each tile and remove one by one. The tiles will probably break as they are removed, but it is still advisable to work on the removal of individual tiles across the room. Once removed, the surface will still be covered with the cork tile adhesive. This is more difficult to remove. It is advisable to use a hot air stripper and scraper to remove the adhesive.
