- Q:Any suggestions on good sofa brands? I've only looked at La-Z-Boy...thinking of looking at Broyhill now.
- I have a Broyhill sofa I purchased in 1997 and still absolutely love it. It is a slipcover sofa--meaning it is upholstered in off white underneath the slipcover, which comes off and I wash it in the washing machine. The slipcover is of good quality and fits well, without being sloppy looking at all. It is also made well, I know because I am a seamstress. I love this feature because I have made another slipcover for a refreshing change. The arms, legs and joints of the sofa are still as sturdy as the day it was delivered. So, I have had good personal experience with Broyhill. I am also an Interior Decorator and when furniture shopping for clients, I push them toward Broyhill. They too, have no complaints. So, I would highly recommend Broyhill.

- interesting. Feathers aren't usually used for sofas because they compact so much, they don't offer good support/structure. Well- the only solution I know of, is making your own liner. You would have to open the cushions, and If there IS a liner in there already, take it out, and basically make a pillowcase around with with another fabric that will hold in the feathers. (you need a VERY tight weave so they don't come through- check your fabric shop for recommendations near you). If there is no liner in there (loose feathers when you open the zippered cushions) well, that's you're problem. You need to measure and custom sew a liner for it, and put all the feathers inside that. Then you would re-put on the real outer cover to your cushions. If the actual SOFA part (not just additional cushions) has feathers coming out, unless you're very handy, I'd get quotes on getting the whole thing reupholstered. Good Luck.

- Contemporary or traditional is referring to the style of the sofa, and not the fabric it is covered in. You just need to pick the style you prefer.

- Look for frames that are made with a combination of hardwoods or engineered wood that are assembled with mortise and tenon joint construction, glue and tacking. This will ensure superior quality in the internal structure and longevity of the furniture. Corner blocks annd support blocks give additional strength and durability. Seat foundations should be constucted with either 8 way hand tied spring seating, heavy guage sinuous wire or synthetic webbing. Foundations should be connected together by cross wires to provide leveled support and superior comfort. Back foundations should feature heavy guage sinuous wire support as well. Double layers of springs should be used on all arm ends to reinforce strength in that area. Springs and clips used throughout construction should be coated with a protective finish to prolong the longevity of the sofa. Seat cushions should have high density foam cores wrapped with layers of feather/down blends and then fiber. This will provide longevity and a beautiful crown to give the ultimate in seating comfort and durability. Fabrics should meet tests recommended by the American Society for Testing and Materials to ensure seam strength, wearability and stretch tolerance. Upholstering of fabrics to frames should consist of an application that coordinates both horizontal and vertical pattern to ensure a finished design. Fine, quality furniture manufacturers offer warranties on upholstered pieces. They should cover the life of the original fabric on the frame to be free of defect or workmanship. Seat backs and spring constructions should also be warranted. Cushioning and padding materials should be warranted agains loss of resiliency under normal household use at least for a period of five years. Seam separation, shrinkage, dye transference, fabric failure and failure to provide normal wear and tear should also be covered.
- Q:I recently purchased a microfiber sofa and declined the fabric protection - I guess that's the first mistake. I've had the sofa a little over a week and there are four-five huge blue/black spots on the sofa!!! No one has spilled anything and we can not figure out where these stains are coming from. All I could do is get on my knees for quarter-hour with a bowl of sudsy water, a green and yellow dish scrubber (you already know the form), and and previous rag or towel to form of take in the surplus water from the sofas when you scrub. start up rubbin' and scrubbin' with the scrubber. you ought to use the golf green component for the hard crust. It wont harm the sofas. Blow some followers on them once you end in case you have them- the two way they'll dry exceptionally at as quickly as- reliable as new- with out watermarks or anthing! Yippee!

- don't under any circumstances buy a sleeper sofa. they make a crappy sofa and and even crappier bed... the worst of both. and you'll hate having to unmake it every single day to put it back into a couch. you do know that you have to strip the sheets and blankets off in order to put the frame back inside to use it as a couch right? if you can only afford on thing right now then buy a 7' - 9' long sofa. that way you can sleep on it for a while until you get a few more bucks to get yourself a bed.

- When you estimate yardage for reupholstery on a sofa you have to take into consideration the pattern of the fabric and the style of the sofa and the size of the sofa. In order to get exact yardage requirement, you'll need to have whoever is going to recover your sofa give you an estimate. Any professional upholsterer can do that. A hint...if you are using a fabric that is just a solid color something, have the upholsterer railroad the fabric (meaning the fabric runs on the sofa the way it comes off the bolt). You will use less fabric and have less seams. It only works with solids, though. If you try to do it with a pattern, it looks like the pattern is turned on it's side. A good rule of thumb for most medium sized (84 long) is to allow about 20-25 yards.

- There okorder /... I don't know if this will make the cushions a lot higher, though. Would it be possible to add legs to the sofa? They could be screwed into the wood frame, maybe. Or, just painted blocks of wood, placed under the four corners? They'd have to be pretty wide so your sofa doesn't bounce off.

- Do you have a glass sliding door. I had the same problem and I live on the third floor. My buddies and I made a homemade pulley system with alot of rope and we actually took it in from the glass sliding door (wider) deck. Was quite a sight actually. My only other suggestions: Obviously unscrew the legs (I'm sure you've done that). Also: does your home have an outside entrance to the basement and then you could bring it up from there? Good luck
