- I'm not certain of the shape you mean ... although it sounds like a five sided island. I wouldn't do it. It isn't just the corners that you have to consider. How will you tile the centre of a 5 sided island so it blends all sides? I don;t think it will look right unless at least two edges are parallel. I'd suggest doing a accurate drawing of the top of the island and mock up different patterns to see what looks best. However, if you go ahead the obvious way is to break the job down into separate triangles, with the angle at each of the corners of the island being half of the angle between the two sides, then tile parrallel to the front of each of the five sides, with edge tiles for the outmost edge, and continuing the angle at the corner back to a point where two (or more depending on shape) of the corner angles meet. Each corner would therefore be two edge tiles at the outer edge cut to the right angle and butted along the cut edges, and normal tiles cut on the same angle for the inner rows. No problem with 1/4 gaps, but for 2 or 3 tile that may look pretty wide. Other than needing sufficient width for grout to grab, it's a matter of proportion.
- Q: I need to tile a kitchen back splash from counter to cabinets. Backerboard at the moment is drywall, textured and painted. I‘d like to hear some opinions on tiling directly over this or using cement backer board. Also thinset or mastic?
- You said textured. Is that textured paint or lumpy texture . If lumpy texturing, you have to get it smooth. Sand ,scrape or replace, just so its smooth to go over. No cement backer board required. This really isn t a wet area to really be concerned about.. Thinset or mastic will work fine. Thin set is a little harder to work with if your not all thatexperiencedd. But thin set is cheaper. If your using a self stacking tile its real easy. But if the tile your using requires spacers to hold it up until you set the spacer its a pia, but can be done. Mastic , w/ the right trowel , the tile will pretty much set and hold into place until you put a spacer in. Thin set will skim up and set up much quicker when using over dry wall .. The moisture will absorb into the dry wall just faster so you can t do as big an area at once..So when I do thin set over dry wall I make my thinset just a bit( just a bit) so that it ll set a bit longer. This takes practice and you need a bit ofexperiencee. . Now if your using some glass tiles you should use thin set.And they want you to use a special enhanced thin set.. This forms a staircase which is two letters wide and one letter drop at each step. these can fit together perfectly. What I described has a natural 2 right-1 down pattern (from center of cross to center of cross) and a 1 right- 2 up pattern. The slopes of -1/2 versus 2 are perpendicular to one another, but do not give reflective possibilities (I don't think). Rotations by 90 degrees and slides do occur and I think these are all possibilities. The rotations can be centered at several points.

- Always wipe off excess water after you bathe or shower. You can use a wash cloth and wipe off the water from the tiles. Buy a spray bottle and fill 90% water, 10% vinegar. Spray all the tiles in the shower/bath area with the water/vinegar once a week and let dry. The vinegar will not harm the grout or tiles and will eliminate mildew from growing. Bleach would be good for cleaning the tub but its not environmentally friendly. Try water/vinegar and steel wool to get the stains out. Then once a week water/vinegar and wipe clean.
