solar panels are a waste, I work for the biggest energy producer on the east coast and we are required by some really dumb laws to have many types of energy sources, fo course the only ones we make money on are coal and nuclear, solar panels we lose a ton of money on because they never make up for the cost it takes to buy them, and technology cannot bring them down because their too expensive even with a gov't subsidy bc of the products to make them. Don't waste your time with them, if you want to save money get a wood furnace

If your only deed is for power during outages, solar is not the way to go. You can add up all the wattages of the fridge and the lights you want to use, and see if the total is less than the capacity of the generator. If it is more, buying a larger generator is the answer. You can find the wattage of the fridge on the inside, or back. If not, Google the model number and manufacturer. You may already use CFL light bulbs, but if not, they can help reduce the load.

Q:can solar panels have glass between the panels and the sun?

PV panels do not have to be in direct sunlight. If they are behind glass they need to be well ventilated to remove excess heat. If PV cells connected in series are not uniformly illuminated the series will produce an amount of power that is based on the light on the least illuminated cell. Thus moving a panel back from a window will mean that for large parts of the day it will produce almost no power as parts of the panel are shaded. This applies only when the cells are connected in series. In parallel they suffer no special degradation of production, but just the sum of illuminated cells. This makes a difference when you decide to use a higher voltage panel... high voltage panels are more susceptible to partial shading. But connecting low voltage panels in series gives that same degradation. Stay away from placing a panel back away from the window, or close to the edges of the window, under roof overhangs, trees and surrounding building shade, where possible.

they still make them,i have them on my camper to charge the batteries, they are not cheap, however. you can get them at r.v. supply stores. in fact the ones they make now, are quite efficient, many people in the countryside use them for their homes, i dont know why the development for cars is so slow, though.
