- Define 'smoke out of.' I'm not sure what the auto-ignition temperature of the vinyl cement you're using is, there's probably an MSDS sheet on it available from the manufacturer. Depending on how much you're using, I'd be more worried about breaking down the cement with heat and inhaling any off-gassing/fumes. But its probably fine. EDIT: Also, vinyl cement probably won't work. The vinyl cements I'm familiar with use a chemical reaction with the vinyl to create heat and fuse/melt the two pieces of vinyl together. Since glass isn't vinyl, it probably won't hold (for very long, at least).

The cement is the glue that sticks it all together. What you need by the sound of it is mortar, which is just cement and sand, no stone etc. You can get small bags of ready-mixed mortar at various DIY places. Builders sometimes use washing-up liquid in place of a proper plasticiser, it just makes the mix easier to work. You shouldn't need any. What is causing confusion is that Americans often refer to concrete as cement, it's just an expression that isn't strictly correct.

- For a shower I would mix at 5 to 1. Five sand ,one cement. Make it wet enough that it comes out of the mixer by it's own without you having to dig it out. It can be fairly wet but not sloppy.

- as you know, when cement dust mixes with water it turns into cement when dried...now your lungs have moisture in them and when you breath that stuff in it mixes with the moisture in your lungs. so when you breath it in it can turn into cement in your lungs...so its not good at all. make sure your mask is on properly and never work with cement without a mask on. =]
