- Q:What are the benefits of installing tile in kitchen and bathroom or would linoleum be better? Also, how hard is it to install tile floors. I‘ve had friends who‘ve had no experience and they did it and did a good job. I am just a bit skeptical of doing it myself but just wondered if there are videos out there that shows you how to do it.
- Tile looks soooo much nicer and it is durable and easy to care for. I tiled my kitchen countertops and backsplash and small bathroom floor. It really is easy. Home Depot and Lowe's has a free class. You don't need to buy a video. There are plenty of websites with good instructions and pictures. A few tips...the hardest parts are the initial planning and if doing the bathroom, removing the toilet. I drew my floor to scale, one foot equals one inch on paper (if you are using the standard 12 tiles. Take a piece of wax paper and draw one inch grid large enough to cover the drawing of your room. It is pretty good in showing you how the tiles will fit. The pencil lines are your grout lines. Also, buy a few tiles and lay them out to be sure of your design. It really isn't hard and to looks so good when you are finished. Just take your time.
- Q:I redid my floor in november using the sticky tiles I purchased from Family Dollar. I wanted to take the tiles off. Is there a easy way to do this without spending lots of money?
- Heating the tiles up will make for easy removal.But you cant just use a standard hair dryer. Rent a commercial heat gun. It ll heat the tile up for easy removal. Most people think a regular dryer will work, it wont. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
- Q:Our house was built in 1925. My husband is removing our bathroom floor tiles that haven‘t been touched since then...we had only vinyl tiles on top of the old. He discovered these tiles are extremely difficult to take out they are very hard tiles under the vinyl we have now. Then when he tried to remove the hard tiles he had to remove concrete like stuff and sand like stuff. It‘s been one hell of a job just to remove everything. He went down to the foundation of the house! I just started worrying now about asbestos. I remember how old homes have them. Is it possible there is asbestos in these? There is a lot of dust in the house because of the removal process. Anyone know? I have two small kids and I‘m petrified. I‘ve heard of vinyl tiles having them, but what about the other stuff in our floors?

- If they are the newer cement tiles, I would try a small cement drill, about the size of a 16 penny nail. Try to gently drill a hole in the tile where you want to nail it to the roof. Or use screws that don't rust. Don't nail or screw down to the tile, that will break it. You just want the nail to hold the tile in position. If they are the older mission tiles, made of clay, the same might work. But they are very brittle and may need a wood support shaped the same as the tile to put under before drilling.................JJJ
- Q:I have gauges and scraps on my ceramic tile, i want to fix and even out the existing tile, then glaze it?
- If these tiles are already installed I think you are out of luck for any long term fix. Ceramic tile glaze is fired onto the tiles in a kiln at very high heat. The firing makes the glaze and tile bond in a way that fillers, puttys, or paint cannot achieve. If your tile is that worn, it is possible that you have the wrong grade of tile for the situation where it is being worn so much. You may have earned yourself a new tile shower, floor, countertop, whatever....
- Q:My wife noticed that our kitchen tile is made of a stone type substance not the traditional shiny type. well, i have to re grout the floor but now i also want to put a sealant on top of the whole floor. whats the best stuff and way? ty
- Tile Lab, Cerama Seal and Miracle 511 is the 3 main ones I ve used over the years with out a problem. Get one that is a penetrating sealer which can be used on grout as soon as 72 hrs after grouting. But if you truly have a stone and not a glazed product you ll want to seal the tiles before grouting and then 72 hrs after to seal the grout and then seal the grout twice, Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. - Q:My foyer and hallway is white tile with white grout. I am more vintage/traditional and was going to be using new grout. Are there any other colors besides white that will look good for the grout?
- Depend on the style of house.. example 50s and victorian houses black will look good.Other than that I wouldn t change it. You make much of a dramatic change and eyes will be drawn downward..If your having trouble w/ the white grout staying white try staining it w/ a stain made for grout.. Time consuming and slow but you can do it yourself and it ll last for years.. Digging out grout is a risk of chipping tiles and not digging down deep enough I stained my gout from a lite grey to a dark grey .. GL
- Q:The tile in my shower floor got torn apart
- DIY doc is correct, but I would add that if this condition has been there for a while, there is the possibility that the floor under the tub is rotted from getting wet everytime some took a shower. I recently had a simular problem in a kitchen of a friend. When I pulled up the tile the floor was so bad that I could stick a screw driver through it with little difficulty. Pulling up the rotted floor boards i discovered that the sub-floor was rotted also. After a little investigating I found a leak in a water line going under his dishwasher. His wife never told him because she thought she was using the dish washer incorrectly. (yes, she is blonde) We had to replace all the flooring in the kitchen

- Yes. I have tiled 10's of thousands of feet on green board. It's not my choice , but you know contractors go the cheapest way. Keep green board a 1/2 off the tub. It will last a lot longer.I also would not use adhesive it is messy and loses hold after a few years. I used plain OL' thinset. It holds great and is easy to wipe out of the joints.And don't let anyone tell you different. I set tile for 30 yrs.
