- Q: what is the average cost to replace a valve core on a car? also can any car shop do it or do i have to go to a conrads etc.
- You can do it yourself very cheaply. All you need to do is go to Walmart or a Auto parts store and get four valve cores and a valve core remover, then go to a gas station the has a air compressor. Remove the valve cores and put the new ones in, you don't have to let all the air out Just put the new valve core in and air the tire back up. I would check the old valve cores before I changed them or have them changed by mixing water and soap together and put in on the top of the valve core, if it bubbles then you need to replace them, if it doesn't bubble someone is just try to scam you.

- Yeap, you need a tube with a Presta valve. Do not drill your Bontrager rims to te able to use your Schrader valve, you will ruin them. Also, the base of the valve will not fit the V of the Bontrager. The plastic cup can be discarded but you better keep it to help keep dirt out of the delicate threads and the seal. You can use the plastic cup also to make an adapter so you can use the Schader pump, just cut off the dome at the end of the cup and presto your Presta. Some people always use the cut-off cup to avoid bending and damaging the Presta valve, this is particularly recommended whem kids are going to use the pump. I have only broken a Presta valve myself but it does happen, sometimes they get decapitated. Now, you say that the inner tube is Specialized? You are not trying to put the valve through the hole with the cap on, are you? Just checking.

- I work on antique steam boilers and engines for a hobby and if your supply valve isn't letting feedwater into the boiler, I'm going to tell you right now that you potentially have a VERY dangerous situation on your hands. Until you get this issue resolved, I would recommend that you not steam this boiler up under any circumstances, unless you have a backup feedwater delivery system that is working correctly. Many people don't know this, but a low water condition in a boiler under steam is essentially a ticking time bomb and can result in a fatal explosion. As to what may be causing it, I would say it's possibly one of two things: 1.) The check valve has been installed backwards and the flow of water is basically pushing it shut. 2.) The check valve is installed correctly, but is frozen shut due to corrosion and scale. Either way, I would have a certified boiler inspector come out and take a look at it; he can probably tell you more than I can.
