water to wash it.
Ice or snow—Apply calcium chloride or rock salt, it can melt ice or snow, then use hot soapy water to wash it.
Stain soil and dirts— Apply detergent, which contains oxalic acid or phosphoric acid. Whiping the stain for 10-15 mins.

- Q: Another laminate flooring question.I am laying this floor in a family room which has a total of 7 doorways. What is the best method of installing this kind of floor along(not through) doorways?
- I agree with laying the board flat and tapping it together. Use a scrap piece of flooring to tap on that is laid against the board being tapped together. This way you will not damage the board.
- Q: I need help finding out if the floor in the building I work at is capable of supporting a restaurant.I know an engineer should be hired, but my boss is an architect who thinks he knows. The question comes in two parts-1- 2 1/2" x 12" (actual) joists on 16" centers, 16' 6" long, made of 100+ yr. old western wood (presumably San Francisco area lumber). Are they capable of supporting 100 lbs. sq ft. load?2- If a wall (theoretically non load-bearing, but floor to ceiling, with two floors of apartments above) were put on the floor, parallel to the joist, would the joist underneath it need to be reinforced? If it makes any difference, the floor will be 4" x 4" ceramic tile, on two layers of 3/4" ply.
- No, the floor joist are not adequate. The rule of thumb for residential floor systems is the span of the joist does not exceed the height of the joist. So, a 2x12 maximum span is 12', 2x10 is 10' and so on. Plus, you mentioned added sub floor and ceramic tile - this just adds to the live load on this floor. The supporting wall for the 2 levels above is most certainly going to need the floor joist under it supported. You will have 1 floor joist carrying this added weight of the new wall even if it does not carry much weight from the above 2 floors already in place. Then you add the occupancy load and tables/chairs for a restaurant. Your floor is going to shake every time someone walks across it. What you need to do is go into the basement/or crawls space and install a floor beam perpendicular to the existing floor joist and install it right at the center of the span. Anyway - No, it won't hold the load you have in mind.
- Q: I have been cleaning my laminate flooring with some cleaner just for laminate flooring and my floor keeps looking duller and duller with each cleaning. It is a new floor and I want it to look great not dull and old looking. Any suggestions?
- I know the feeling! Everything you do makes them look worse : ( . Here is what I did; Take a long cup/glass and fill with about half a cup of baking soda, and fill the rest of the cup/glass with white vinegar and let it fizz over : D take a wash cloth and scrub. Repeat until you have the entire floor done. After that, simply you a wet towel to wipe up the baking soda residue off the floor. Hope it helped. NOTE: THE VINEGAR IS WHAT CLEANS THE FLOOR, THE BAKING SODA IS TO REMOVE SCUFF MARKS AND OTHER HARD SPOTS.
- Q: We are putting in a brand new kitchen and are on a tight budget so plan to use a laminate floating floor. My question is should we put it down before we install cabinets and appliances, or install those first and then put the flooring around them? My husband wants to floor around them to save money, but I think it would look nicer to have the whole floor covered and then put everything on top. What do you think?
- put in your cabinetry first, then your floor, then your appliances. different cabinets have different footprints, which is why you put them in first. your appliance should go on top of the new floor in case you want to replace them or move them for whatever reason. since you're on such a tight budget, comparison shop for the cabinets and counter top, with the economy the way it is, you may be able to get a good deal on cabinets & counters. you may also want to remove the old cabinets yourself, and if you don't damage them, you could donate them to habitat for humanity or another charitable organization. once the cabinets are installed, measure for your flooring, for appliances check out the scratch and dent departments, you can get a good deal for something that could have a dent that no one will notice or see.
- Q: The whole second floor (approximately 800 sq. Ft) will have the laminate floors, with exception of the bathrooms.
- What's wrong with or your concerns with using transitions? The house will look weird if it looks like one continuous room, especially if you have doorways with doors. Plus if anything goes wrong it will be easier to fix with the breaks in the flooring.
- Q: My husband and i live on post military housing. We have all white linoleum tile flooring. It is absolutely horrible to clean. If the dog has an accident.. it literally stains the floor.. Bleach barely cleans it up. Also.. stuff peels off of it if we use bleach.. ( it's like a plastic film that comes off... i think it's the wax they put on it before we moved in ). So my question is-How else can we clean this floor? What cleaning products do you suggest? Thanks in advance :)
- It's possible that the bleach is destroying the surface coating of the floor, the top layer that makes it shiny. While it's okay to use bleach on most vinyl floors, it should be diluted and is not what I'd recommend for every day cleaning. It just isn't necessary and is too harsh. If you're not using something like a Swiffer, then hot water with mild soap, or any all purpose cleaner like Pine Sol or Mr Clean, or a couple of tablespoons of ammonia, or even plain white vinegar, are enough to clean a floor. I can't see the floor, so I don't know whether the coating is coming off your floor, or whether it's wax peeling up(seems unlikely; floor wax usually wears off but does not peel) but in view of the fact that things can seep into the floor and leave a stain, I'm guessing that the shiny coating is pretty much toast. it As to what to do now, if that were my floor I would get myself a top quality commercial type floor finish, an acrylic polymer sealer, and put several coats on. I can buy that stuff here at Home Depot, and janitorial supply places will also have it. The sealer seals the floor, then you can put a softer liquid polish on it, which protects the sealer. That top coat needs to be redone, but if you redo it often enough the sealer under it is never disturbed.
- Q: How often do you clean your flooring and what do you clean it with?
- Laminate floors are very low maintenance. Ironically, if you use a lot of cleaning products on them, they will actually look worse...they will get smudges and streaks. And never use steam on laminate...steam can absolutely ruin laminate floors. It can cause warping and even cause the veneer to peel right off. Having said this, exactly how do you maintain a laminate floor? Mostly just by vacuuming it as needed. When you need more than a vacuuming, use a microfiber mop and plain old water. No cleanser, no vinegar, no nothing...just water. Let the mop do the work. Microfiber is fantastic at removing dirt and streaks and doesn't need a cleanser to help. Wet the mop and use it. No need to dry the floor, but also don't let water pool on the floor. You want a good damp mop, but not puddles of water. (Streaks of water are ok.) If you don't already have a microfiber mop, you can buy them at Walmart, Target, Kmart, Home Depot, and even Dollar General. I've never used anything but a vacuum and a microfiber mop (plus water) on our laminate floors and they still look fantastic after all these years. Hope this helps. -
- Q: how to prove that floor(-x) = -ceiling(x) and that -floor(x) = ceiling(-x) show steps
- Let x= k+p where k is an integer and 0<=p<1 (obviously k is first integer less than x) floor(-x)=floor(-k-p) and since k or -k is an integer we can take it out of floor(or ceiling) floor(-x)=-k +floor(-p) floor(-p)=-1 when -1<-p<0 and floor(-p)=0 when p=0 -ceiling(x)=-ceiling(k+p)=-k - ceiling(p) ceiling(p)=1 when 0<p<1 and ceiling(p)=0 when p=0 then floor(-p)=-ceiling(p) thus we proved floor(-x)=-ceiling(x) ceiling(-x)=celing(-k-p)= -k + celing(-p) ceiling(-p)=0 when -1<-p<=0 -floor(x)=-floor(k+p)=-k - floor(p) -floor(p)=0 when 0<=p<1 then ceiling(-p)=-floor(p) thus we proved ceiling(-x)=-floor(x)
- Q: We are redoing a house and all the flooring had to be ripped up because of animal smells& stains(this is a fore closer we bought hopefully to retire in)anyway dining rm has beautiful med dk hardwood on it, and it is open floor plan, thinking of cork for kitchen, any body used cork? how does it wear? difficulty in putting down? And how about linoleum, I have heard it has come along way since the 60s. Thanks for your time.
- Cork is hypoallergenic as has a natural substance in it that makes it resistant to mold and insects. Cork is a sustainable environmentally friendly product and has a great appearance.I would phone a reputable flooring store and make sure you have someone that has experience install it. It is a personal preference of to what you choose, my friend loves her linoleum as she finds it so easy to care for. It looks like tile and I have seen people sitting at her table reach down and touch it. They have very realistic patterns. Hope this helps.
- Q: I am looking for a kitchen floor. I do not want ceramic tile and I am leery of hardwood. I was looking at cork flooring and wanted to know if anyone has it in their kitchens and if they like it or not. Is it hard to keep clean?
- definitly NOT! they arent very appealing and..... if you spill something on it it won't come off very easily!
