Q: in a lab at school we did heat treatment of steelwhat are the possible phases present in the steel sample in as-received, as-quenched and as-tempered conditions? specifically when is it ferrite, austenite and pearliteis the steel originally in the ferrite phase? then when headed turns into austenite and when quenched martensite is formed and when tempered cermentite is formed...........where is pearlite involved and am i correct about the ferrite?
hey from what i learned in uni last sem, steel is originally ferrite form at first at room conditions. it will undergo poly morphic transformation to become FCC structure austenite form at 912 degree celcius. under conditions, it can become pearlite (which is a combination of ferrite and cementite) or bainitie( a finer form of pearlite). queching conditions to room temperature will form martensite which is the strongest but brittle steel form. tempered cementite is formed when we quench it and then raise temperatures before sir cooling. hope it helps, pls vote me best answer is i deserve it. thanks
Q: also what are the factors of location of these steel plants
iron ore comes from mines in North America, but also abroad. I think the majority of ore comes from mines in Michigan, Minnesota, and Canada. reason that steel plants are near great lakes is because the car industry is there... they are the major consumer of steel...
Q: What is the role of steel coils in the manufacturing of pipes and tubes?
Steel coils play a critical role in the manufacturing of pipes and tubes. They are the primary raw material used to produce these products. Steel coils are made by processing molten steel through a series of rolling mills, which shape the steel into flat, thin sheets. These sheets are then wound into coils for easy transportation and storage. In the manufacturing process of pipes and tubes, steel coils are unwound, and the flat sheets are passed through a series of machines and processes. The first step is usually to cut the steel sheets into the desired width and length. This is followed by forming the sheets into a cylindrical shape through a process called roll forming or continuous forming. The edges of the sheet are welded together to create a continuous pipe or tube. Steel coils provide several advantages in the manufacturing process. Firstly, they offer consistent and reliable quality. The production of coils ensures uniform thickness and strength throughout the entire length of the sheet, which translates to consistent properties in the final pipes and tubes. This is particularly important for applications that require high structural integrity and reliability. Secondly, steel coils allow for efficient production. The continuous supply of coils ensures a steady flow of raw material, reducing downtime and improving productivity. Coils also enable automated processes, such as roll forming, which can be highly efficient and cost-effective. Furthermore, steel coils offer flexibility in terms of size and dimensions. Coils can be produced in various widths and thicknesses, allowing manufacturers to customize the size and specifications of the pipes and tubes according to their specific requirements. This flexibility enables the production of pipes and tubes for a wide range of applications, from plumbing and construction to oil and gas pipelines. In conclusion, steel coils are the essential raw material in the manufacturing of pipes and tubes. They provide consistent quality, enable efficient production, and offer flexibility in size and dimensions. Without steel coils, the production of pipes and tubes would be significantly more challenging and less efficient.
Q: What is the typical size and weight of a steel coil?
The typical size and weight of a steel coil can vary depending on the specific application and industry. However, in general, steel coils are typically manufactured in widths ranging from 0.5 to 2 meters (1.6 to 6.6 feet) and can weigh anywhere between 1 to 25 metric tons (2,205 to 55,116 pounds). The exact size and weight of a steel coil will depend on factors such as the type of steel used, the intended use of the coil, and the manufacturing process employed.
Q: What are the dimensions of steel coils used in the storage system industry?
The dimensions of steel coils used in the storage system industry vary depending on the specific requirements of the storage system and the industry it is used in. However, common dimensions for steel coils used in storage systems can range from 0.15mm to 3.5mm in thickness, and from 600mm to 2100mm in width. The length of the coils can also vary, typically ranging from 1000mm to 6000mm.
Q: What are the different grades of steel used for coils?
The different grades of steel used for coils vary depending on the intended application and specific requirements. Some common grades include low carbon steel (C1008/1010), medium carbon steel (C1035/1050), high carbon steel (C1074/1095), stainless steel (300 series), and advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) grades such as DP, TRIP, and TWIP. These grades offer varying levels of strength, ductility, corrosion resistance, and formability, allowing manufacturers to choose the most suitable grade for their specific coil processing needs.
Q: How are steel coils used in the production of metal cabinets?
Steel coils are used in the production of metal cabinets as they serve as the primary raw material. These coils are unwound and cut into precise lengths, which are then formed, shaped, and welded to create the various components of the cabinet, such as the sides, back, and shelves. The steel coils provide the necessary strength, durability, and rigidity required for the construction of sturdy and long-lasting metal cabinets.
Q: What is the process of galvanizing steel coils?
Enhancing the durability and protecting steel coils from corrosion involves a series of steps in the galvanization process. To begin, the steel coils undergo a thorough cleaning to eliminate any dirt, oil, or impurities on the surface. This is achieved through an acid pickling process, where the coils are immersed in a diluted acid solution or treated with a chemical cleaner. The aim is to ensure the surface of the coils is free from contaminants, allowing for better adhesion of the zinc coating. Following the cleaning process, the coils are rinsed to remove any remaining acid or cleaner, preventing adverse reactions in the next stage. The subsequent step involves the actual galvanization, where the cleaned coils are submerged in a bath of molten zinc. To guarantee an even coating, the coils are carefully passed through the zinc bath using rollers or other mechanisms. The zinc bath is maintained at a specific temperature, typically around 450°C (842°F), enabling the molten zinc to bond with the steel surface. Upon withdrawal from the zinc bath, excess zinc is eliminated by passing the coils through air knives or by centrifugal spinning. This ensures control over the thickness of the zinc coating, resulting in a uniform appearance. Once the galvanization process is complete, the steel coils are gradually cooled to room temperature. This facilitates the solidification and firm bonding of the zinc coating with the steel surface, creating a protective barrier against corrosion. The final step involves inspection and quality control. The galvanized steel coils are carefully examined for any defects, such as uneven coating or areas with insufficient zinc coverage. This inspection is typically conducted visually or using specialized equipment capable of detecting anomalies. Additionally, the coating thickness is measured to ensure it meets the required specifications. In conclusion, the galvanization process for steel coils is designed to enhance their longevity and shield them from rust and corrosion. By applying a layer of zinc coating to the steel surface, the coils become more resistant to environmental factors, making them suitable for a wide range of applications across various industries.
Q: Can steel coils be stored in unheated warehouses?
Yes, steel coils can be stored in unheated warehouses as long as proper precautions are taken to protect them from moisture, condensation, and extreme temperature fluctuations.
Q: How are steel coils inspected for surface finish using profilometry?
Steel coils are inspected for surface finish using profilometry by measuring the surface topography using a profilometer. The profilometer scans the surface of the steel coil and records the deviations from the ideal surface. This data is then used to determine the roughness, waviness, and other surface parameters of the steel coil, providing a quantitative assessment of its surface finish quality.
