Q:carbon steel?
All steel has carbon in it, usually less than 1%. The fancy steels that have enough other elements mixed in are generally called alloy steels. So, carbon steel usually refers to the most basic cheap steel. A36 is a kind of carbon steel that meets specific standards of the A36 specification. I don't know what 01 carbon steel is. Steel is available all over Los Angeles so just look in the phone book yellow pages under steel or metal. If you are near El Monte, my favorite place is Industrial Pipe and Steel, lots of cheap scrap, used machinery, and a huge industrial hardware store built right in. There is a place in Gardena called MK Metals. There's a great place just north of the Burbank airport (can't remember the name) and one in Harbor City called Action Metals (big on recycling). No sense driving all over. Just check the phone book. Two very common carbon steels just go by the terms hot rolled and cold rolled. Hot rolled is the cheapest and softest and still has the mill scale attached so the surface is a little rough and uneven, but this is by far the most commonly used. Cold rolled (usually the AISI 1018 grade) has been work hardened and rolled flat and smooth. It's slightly more expensive but stronger and prettier. If you are going to cut away some of the thickness and you want the steel to remain flat, you probably want hot rolled steel because sometimes the cold rolled steel (CRS) will warp. It does that because the steel is already prestressed from the cold rolling process and when you cut away some of the pre-stressed material the forces holding the material flat are no longer balanced.

The strength and corrosion resistance depends on the mix. Pure steel is pure iron plus 6% pure carbon. It is the carbon molecules that give it a tough crystallized strength. Pure iron is wrought iron and you can bend that with your hands. Strength also depends on the shape of the beam the most common steel beam is the W flange more commonly called the I beam. That is because the strength of the ‘I’ beam is just a little bit less than if the entire I beam was filled in; however the weight and material savings is huge. Steel itself has no corrosion resistance and is often given a zinc coating just to resist oxidization. Manganese, vanadium and tungsten are just some of the other elements added to improve the steel.

I do engraving on knife blades (actually all kinds of metal but occasionally knife blades). Every company's blades are a little different. I get the idea that different companies have different compounds. All the materials are some compromise between hardness, toughness, corrosion resistance, machineability and other considerations. Stainless is generally not as good as a high-carbon steel, but high-carbon steel rusts and turns black. Stainless is much easier to keep clean.

Titanium has better high temperature strength than steel. Titanium doesn't resist shocks like steel can. It's more brittle. It's also far more difficult to weld. Titanium must be welded in an oxygenless environment. The average strength of steels that are made is under that of titanium. However, the strongest steel is stronger than the strongest titanium. Q:Purchase Steel - For Construction Purpose?
It has been a few years since I was in the business but I have found that some steel from some countries can be quite different from the standards steel made in the US. For instance, one in 5 of my Indian made cast iron fittings would break when tightening it down. This never happened with US fittings. Even though I could take it back and get a refund, the increased price of US made materials was worth the savings in time and trouble. On a job in Columbia, the 3 inch angle iron came to us in 4 different sizes, all around three inches but not quite. This is not to say that all foreign metal is bad. One RD project I headed up we found a foreign bearing steel to be far superior to anything we could get in the states.

OK, here is my take on it Take equal lengths of steel wire, one is going to bare, one is going to be encased You will need a tension rig, simply this will be one fixed end and one end you can hang a weight down. For the test you will affix one end and string it between to supports with one end hanging off, which is where you will put the weight. The put a ruler where the weight is, so as the weight pulls the wire down (after it is hot) you can time the stretching. lastly you need a place to put a controlled fire under the wire, I'd reccommend something tame like a camping stove OK, got a test rig and two pieces and a way to test. You'll have to play with different fires and weights to see what works best Putting the concrete on the wire is a tricky one since you don't want the concrete to take the load. Get a tub or dish of approriate size and put some wet concrete in it, partway up. Take one of the wires and coat it with wax or something like it that is soft. Place the wire, with the ends sticking out, in the concrete tub and pour more on to cover it. Let this whole thing harden. You might want to have a specific shape to the tub so it comes out a certain size Now, you have an uncoated wire and an coated one. Be careful you don't pull the wire out of the concrete Another way to do this would be to use joing compound, which is a type of mortor (cement). You can buy it a home depot or such. Mix it up as thick as possible and just cake it on the wire and let harden. You can shape the coating using saran wrap or something maybe. I my world we call this stuff monster mud, its used to shape things for Halloween props like robes into figures. Its quite sturdy when done When you are ready to test just hook each part up with the same fire and weight and take readings of stretch vs. time
