How it can possible? Why crane is not offballencing while we adding extra counter weights on it without any suspended load?: Usually the counterweights can move back and forth on an arm. They are moved toward the crane when there is no load and away from the crane when there is a load. If the counterweights can't move, then the crane must be designed to hold (at least) the minimum counterweights in their fixed location. As the crane gets loaded, the net moment decreases, and then increases in the other direction as more and more load gets added. It is still likely that the maximum design moment when loaded far exceeds the moment due to the counterweights on an unloaded crane.

First generation crane vessels had much smaller lifting capacities and were either constructed on conventional hulls or were converted from existing ships. These types were capable of making ocean passages using their own propelling machinery.

Their bases sit inside square lattice support structures and can climb them. When they get to the top of the structure they raise two more half squares that are bolted together around the base of the crane and the crane can then climb into the higher structure. The process is repeated until they get to the height limit of the crane. It's pretty amazing. Sometimes the crane base remains at the bottom, but sometimes, they close the floor below and remove the base that is no longer used, and just march the whole crane up the floors. Smaller cranes can be lifted by mobile cranes that go elsewhere, but the big ones use the method above.
