- I was going to answer this but there are so many differences it would fill a bookJust a few points though: 1) Aluminum is not necessarily lighter than Chrome Molybdneum; 2) Either material- when used for a bike frame they are both alloysChrome moly steel is an alloy of iron, chromium, molybdneum and some other stuff while aluminum alloy is made of several components mixed together as well; 3) Aluminum must be anealed and tempered after weldingIncorrect execution of this may result in sudden catastrophic failure; 4) Steel will last forever (provided it doesn't rust) while aluminum has a limited life depending on alloy, usage, and temper'nuff said.
