- Q: I have wheels on my car that are currently 18x7.5 and 20 offset. I want to go with a smaller wheel like a 16 inch or 17 but I dont want to sacrifice my width of wheel I have. I have a mid engine rear wheel drive mr2 and I need fat back tires to keep traction. If i get a 16x7.0 and 40 offset is it going to be skinnier? Which number affects the width and what is the offset in relation to the width?
- In wheel measurement, your 18x7.5, means that the diameter of the rim is 18 inches and the width is 7 1/2 inches. I'm not sure where you got the 20 offset, offset is a measurement from the back of the wheel to the mounting plate. you would need to buy different tires for the wheels, a 16x7 would work, the half inch narrower wheel will accommodate the width but if you are buying new wheels and tires go for the 7.5 or 8 inch wide. There are other things to consider also. If you use a tire of the same height, the sidewall height will increase, allowing more sidewall flex which will alter the handling characteristics of the vehicle,(ie..rollover).

- front wheel is better for control. 1.) the engine is over the front axel causing more weight and over all more traction and grip to the road. 2.) in winter through snow you are pulling the car from the heavy front as apposed to trying tp push the heavy front from the back. 3.) less parts are needed for a front wheel drive car.

PS if you're using a chassis where they're all the same size wheel then go by wear but this would affect your outdoor wheels more than your indoor ones unless your inside and outside edges are completely out of whack.
