- Q: while checking wiring in ceiling fixtures, some fiberglass fell. I vacuumed it up. how dangerous is it? we have kids here and nothing was covered as we didn't expect that.
- Most ceiling light fixtures were built with a pad of fiberglass insulation and some with a Al foil sheet for temperature control in light fixture-- usually it was a yellow fiberglass--- no big deal if some fell when you took the fixture down---
- Q: I have a 120 year old house w/ a flat roof, no attic and no insulation. I have a dropped ceiling on the top floor - drop is about 5". Ceiling tiles are not insulated. I plan on getting insulation and having it rest on top of the ceiling tiles.I live in Pittsburgh, PA where we get hot summers and cold winters. What would be a better insulation - traditional fiberglass or radiant? Radiant appeals to me since installation is easier, but if it won't be as effective, I won't do it. Thanks!
- get cellulose. fiberglass will melt in you have a fire, then your house will burn. cellulose while it is paper, will not burn. it has borax and other fire retardant things in it.
- Q: I have one of those fairly standard (US) ceiling light fixtures that is bowl shaped and takes two light bulbs. That thin tin foil layer came off and now the light bulbs radiate directly on to that fiber/insulation material. Is this a fire hazard? It is one of three and I don't want to replace it but I also don't want to replace the house and my family either if you know what I mean. Can I put some real tin-foil back in its place?
- its probably ok without it but you can use a piece of aluminum foil in its place.
- Q: My neighbor told me that there is no attic space in the main bedroom. It is a 2 story house, but the master bedroom is the ONLY room that is significantly hotter than the other 2 rooms. Is it possible to put some sort of insulation over the existing ceiling and then drywall over it? Or....??????
- Well, if you are willing to re-drywall anyway, why not tear down your existing ceiling and insulate it with fiberglass batts or blown cellulose? Then, you won't have two ceilings. When I moved into my house, I always hated how people just layered things like floors and just put the new over the old. Plus, I don't know how much ceiling space you have, but you would lose about 4 inches from redrywalling a second ceiling.
- Q: We have an area in our ceiling that had water damage a few years ago and we repaired it ourselves for a quick fix. We never got around to actually getting it professionally repaired, but had never had any issues so it wasn't something we were worried about. About 3 days ago we noticed that there was a hole, about an inch long, I'm the crease of the ceiling where it meets the wall in the same place we had repaired. We don't know if maybe there is a mouse in the wall chewing a hole, if the house finally settled to the point where it cracked our repair job, or if there is another answer. It appears that the holes are only in the drywall tape and not in the drywall itself. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be going on our who we could call in to inspect this?
- I would suspect mold - esp. since moisture was a problem.
- Q: I was replacing a bathroom fan and the new bathroom fan is bigger than the old one. I took out the old one. Then I used a pencil and traced around the new fan. Then I used a reciprocating saw for the first time and got a little crazy with it. Now the hole is slightly too big and when I put the grill cover on the fan, I can see the hole. I'm not sure what to do now. I still got old pieces of the ceiling. Maybe I can do something with it?

- Q: I'm remodeling a bathroom, and I need to know the best insulation for sound/moisture? Also should I use the regular drywall or the green one on the ceiling?
- i have a drop ceiling in my bathroom and use fiberglass plastic coated tiles that give some insulation, are waterproof on the plastic surface and can be (have done this several time) painted after 4/5 years if you so desire or just put new ones in front of the old ones and now the insulation value has doubled. you can keep doing that till they're 3 deep. you can buy them and the tracks that they fit in at home depot. a small bathroom would be less than $100.00 to do. you need to keep in mind when doing those ceilings, always find the MIDDLE of the two connecting walls then measure 12 inches on both sides from the middle. that's where you put the runners. NOT IN THE MIDDLE. now the room is divided equally from the two middles. if you don't then one side will be larger than the other. it may not make sense to you, but believe me it's true. there's not a room in my house that i don't have this system. if you ever get a water leak you just clean up the tile or replace it. use a 2x2 system not a 2 x 4. all the tile comes 2 x 4 (actually a little less) find the exact middle and then cut them in half. not a days work involved. putting up the track is more than 1/2 the job. it must be level all the way around and from side to side some of my ceilings i actually have rolled r-19 insulation on top of those tiles. remember armstrong esprite plastic coated tiles NOT CARDBOARD once the cardboard gets wet it needs to be replaced. i'm not sure but i believe i've had this system in the bathroom for about 20 years now, and other parts of the house for over 30 years, you can paint them or buy new ones and replace them. sometimes that's the wiser thing to do. hope that helps you. greenwall is always better for the bathroom.
- Q: What is the commonly used asbestos in chemistry?

- Q: I just bought a home with an unfinished basement. I was thinking of finishing the basement and creating a game room. I wanted to soundproof it but I dont want to spend a ton of money. I know that I can buy soundproof drywall but that stuff is expensive! Is there anything that I can stuff between the ceiling beams to soundproof the room? I dont want to put in a double layer of sheetrock becuase the ceiling is already only 7 feet. Thanks!
- Some people use egg cartons.
- Q: What type of contractor would be able to remove the insulation from the crawlspace ceiling and put it against the outside wall where it would actually be useful?
- There is normally some insulation in the ceiling of the crawl space. Heat moves from HOT to Cold, and the cool crawl space should be insulated from your kitchen. If your Kitchen floor is cold you may even want more. Or put carpet in you kitchen. (It is done.) Insulation is normally thickest (6 to 12 inches) above living space ceilings, next thickest (3 to 6 inches) in living space walls, and thinnest below floors (3 inches). Any home builder, home addition contractor, or serious handyman can add more insulation to your crawl space.
