- Q: i just finished painting my rooms. I want that color on my ceramic lamp bases to match the theme and color of the walls. The paint i used has a primer built in would this be okay to use?
- Not all paints will adhere to ceramic, even those with a built-in primer. Your best bet is to first spray the lamp base with a shellac or a pigmented shellac primer (such as Zinsser's BIN) to set up a surface that will allow the paint to adhere. Then you can paint it with any paint you like. Shellac dries within the hour, so you can prime and paint it in the same day. Clean the lamp base before painting it to get any hand oils or ambient grease off of the ceramic. Window cleaner works well for that. Use masking tape and newspaper to completely mask off the fittings and cord before you prime or paint the lamp base. And put the lamp shade in another room until your paint is dry. Recommendation: do not use a flat wall paint for your lamp base, as dirt, fingerprints, and other soils will not clean off. Use only a satin, semi-gloss, or gloss paint. It will look better too.

- Naturally, the reagents required will depend on what metal(s) are in the deposits. If the metal is titanium, as you suggest, then it will take something like a nitric-hydrofluoric acid mixture to do the job. Generally, the mixture would be on the order of concentrated nitric acid 2 parts, hydrofluoric acid 1 part, and water 1 part by volume. NOTE: Although nitric acid has its hazards, the hydrofluoric acid is an especially dangerous and insidious material. It causes severe burns that are not immediately painful and may not be apparent until hours later when it's too late to do much good for them. If you have it available, ammonium bifluoride is a somewhat safer and equally effective alternative to the hydrofluoric acid. Whatever you use, be sure you understand the dangers and use appropriate safety gear. Of course, there's the possibility that the fluorides will also etch your ceramics - it depends on what they are. Good luck with this project. Be sure to try small test samples before going large-scale.

First you have to convert the mm to centimeters and find the volume of the copper- 1mm.1cm VolumePI*R*R*H So Volume3.14*1.5*1.5*.1.7065 Now, Density Mass/Volume Thus Mass Density*Volume .7065cm3(the Volume)*8.96g/cm3(the density) 6.33024Grams(the mass) So the answer is 6.33024Grams, unless you need to use significant figures whereupon the mass would be 6.33 grams.

- Unfortunately, I have to agree with what plastic said. The process for cleaning the inside of pipes is not a simple one and as plastic said, cleaning would most likely lead to more leaks. Replace the pipes with plastic pipe and you won't have to worry about corrosion.
