- Q: I heard that solar energy has a lot of advantages but are there any drawbacks in using the solar panels?
- The largest drawback is the upfront investment you have to make for solar panels. There are some programs that allow you to finance the panels through your property assessment called PACE and leasing programs that can alleviate the large upfront cash outlay. Solar Panels have a lifespan of 30+ years. Since there are no mechanical parts, there is very little maintenance required. After 0-5 years, you will have to replace the inverter which converts the energy from DC to AC. This is a small cost in respect to the whole installation. The panels clean themselves well with just normal rain. With all the great federal and state incentives, the payback on solar is at it's all-time best. In Massachusetts, for example, the payback right now is 5 or 6 years -- then you would be making money for the next 25+. Another big potential drawback is that you must have the right site for solar to begin with. I'm a solar installer and I can tell you a lot of houses might not be right for solar. The best orientation is south, while southeast and southwest can work as well. The space must be unshaded and it would be best if it had few obstructions like chimneys, etc.

- sure, but if you don't know what you are doing you could really hurt or kill yourself. Basically you can do whatever you want on your side of the power meter and in the rare occurrence when your solar panels are producing more power that your home is using the meter will run backwards and you will be feeding power to the grid and theoretically reducing your power bill. At the very least you will be using less power from the grid

- Only okorder /... Each battery will will need to be enclosed in a box from the weather to preserve it as well as the charge controllers. All this work can be done with success, but will be costly if that's what you want, and want it done right. You have no short cuts around this unless you want to damage your cameras? I still say it would be much easier to run conduit under ground for your power supply to each camera, and it would cost less money and time.
- Q: Here's a little idea I though might help everyone out in Iraq a little: How about if the US mass produces solar panels that are small enough to carry (maybe one foot by three feet) that have a regular power outlet on them to the Iraqis? We could send convoys to the people waiting in line to buy gas and give each person one free solar panel. Why?. A lot of people are buying gas to run generators for air conditioning, not to fuel vehicles. 2. It would help reduce the gas lines if people only needed gas for cars instead of their generators too.3. It would help reduce the fighting over the power grid if people didn't need the grid for their own electrical power.My theory is, once every family in Iraq has enough of these panels that they don't even care about the power grid (during the daytime anyway) it would be much easier to fix the power grid. Maybe these solar panels could even connect to and add to the power grid.
- In oil rich Iraq it would be counter productive to take such an initiative. There is already a huge shortage of solar panels. If you drive the price up more, which you're plan would do, It would just set back their growth in the U.S. and other developed oil poor places. This would hurt us a lot more than it would help them.
