Any rocking means the tile is hitting either a high spot or there is a low spot. Low spots can be dealt with the thin set. As long as its less than a 1/4. High spots usually needs to be ground down flat. So to answer your question , for ease of installation and the prevention of cracked tiles at a later date, floors need to be as flat as possible. If you have minor rocking with no thin set down, in some cases a larger sized trowel will do the trick. Each case is different and has to be dealt with differently. After installing thousands of sq. ft. of tile and remodeling more bathrooms than much else I cant imagine NOT using glazed/fired ceramic...especially in a shower/tub area. The reason is fairly obvious...ceramic/porcelain, is Not strictly porous, and certainly easier to clean. Although my entire bathroom is done in 16 x 16 tile to match the floor, I suggest no larger than 4 x4 or 6 x 6 and/or accomodate any trim type/ decorative tiles you want. I also tile all the way to the ceiling. Steven Wolf Obviously ceramic can be purchased in LOOK LIKE ANYTHING. It need not strictly have a GLOSS, but certainly should be glazed to allow no niches for mold; etc; which you'll have to address regularly in the grout lines anyway.

Tile Lab, Cerama Seal and Miracle 511 is the 3 main ones I ve used over the years with out a problem. Get one that is a penetrating sealer which can be used on grout as soon as 72 hrs after grouting. But if you truly have a stone and not a glazed product you ll want to seal the tiles before grouting and then 72 hrs after to seal the grout and then seal the grout twice, Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. Our new kitchen tile floor was grouted last Thursday (almost a week ago). They did a poor job removing grout from the tile surface - very rough ceramic tile. I‘ve washed and scrubbed, it is cemented on. On top of that I don‘t like the grout color.Nothing has been sealed. So I got some acid wash and a grout stain from Home Depot. The stain says the tile should have been sealed prior to using it, I dont understand why that is. So I dont stain the tile? I‘m afraid if I sealed the tile it would seal the grout, so seems like a bad idea.And the acid wash... is this going to ruin the grout itself? How careful do I need to be about not getting in on the grout? Unfortunately its a large area, kitchen and dining area. 12‘ x 30‘. I‘ll be scrubbing a long time.Any suggestions to make this easier?Thanks!

First STOP. You maybe going in the wrong direction. The seal is only for the grout not the tile. Almost no tile needs sealed. Do not use the acid wash unless it is made for grout film removal. A regular acid wash will damage the grout between the tiles. Before you try the acid wash, try using vinegar about 50 / 50 with water. Then if that does not work use the acid wash if it is for grout film removal. Follow directions very carefully. this is important because if the acid is too strong it will ruin the grout How if you had the tile installed by a flooring store call them for help. if you contracted direct with the installer you may have to clean yourself. Now for the color question. Grout changes color as it dries. It will not be the final color for about 30 days. Yes you can have the grout stained a different color, but it should be done by a professional.
