Q:I am going to be starting college soon and I would like some input to these two engineering majors. I know I want to pick one of these but I dont know which. I love building things but I also love tinkering with computers and technology. I've read that ECE has a better job outlook as well as a better salary. I went into Electrical because I aced those chapters in high school physics. Today I solved several problems. I had one phone conference. Help plan a project, work that was to be done, material needed, key people. I made several follow up phone calls to see where key equipment and what calculations were completed. I reviewed a arc flash study, spot checked by hand a few of the computer calculations. Programs a great, but garbage in garbage out. About a month ago I was out in the field, and my friend Chris had a problem. Chris may be a mechanical engineer, but he is a real motor head. Chris is an expert on rebuilding 50 year old electrical equipment like 15kv breakers. This breaker would not open, and it was stuck so you could not unplug it. Chris injected lubricant into the socket, and had the men rotate the coupling by hand so the lubricant (special lubricant that Chris had to specify and buy) would penetrate. The were then able to unplug the breaker for the first time in 30 years. Chris then had to figure out what was wrong with this complex piece of equipment that can interrupt a 25,000 amp fault in 5 milliseconds. It turned out some grommets were worn. Chris replaced the grommets with ones he had specially machined. Chris then had to tune everything up so the breaker could interrupt a 25,000 amp fault in 5 milliseconds. The only other engineers who can do this are old enough to be Chris's dad, or granddad. These are some of the things real engineers do.
Q:If it is, why?
it is not. that is why there is test equipment that does just that (measure earth resistance). resistance is function of resistivity, area of the corsssection and length of the medium. due sheer size of the electrodes placed in ground we can achieve large contact surface. undergroud water and minerals also reduce resistance. different applications may requre that earth resistance is below some limit. if the limit is small value, grounding will be big job and cost a lot. many new buildings have metal strips placed along foundations (to get large contact surface). dry soil is less conductive and values can vary quite a bit.
Q:Curiosity just got the best of me. To be electrocuted one should make a complete circuit, right? What if you just touch the live wire and nothing else, you're not standing on anything, no ground. you're in mid air. Any thoughts? Thanks
No. Your comment about a complete circuit is correct. Under the conditions you state you will not be electrocuted. One exception would be if the line frequency and voltage was high and you had substantial capacitance to ground you might be electrocuted.

Q:I am looking into putting a trailer hitch on my truck so that we can move. But I get a little bit confused when the mechanic starts talking about electrical equipment. Do I want a round 7 or a flat 4 or both? And is it necessary to also install a trailer brake controller?
Lightweight trailers (3000 lbs and under) do not require trailer brakes. Trailers over 3000 lbs are required to have brakes. There are three types of trailer brakes. There are air brakes, which are commonly found on trucks and tractor trailer rigs. They are not used on the type of trailer you are talking about. There are surge brakes, which have a hydraulic control mounted on the trailer tongue. When the towing vehicle slows, the momentum of the trailer pushes against the ball, and this activates the trailer brakes, These are common on rental trailers (U-haul) and some boat trailers. There are electric brakes. These are controlled by an electric brake controller, and are wired into the vehicle brake light switch. When you hit the brakes,power is sent to the electrical brake actuators on the trailer and the brakes are applied. The trailer brake control can be adjusted to provide the right amount of braking power being applied to the trailer under different conditions. You want less braking on an empty trailer than a loaded one. If you are going to be renting a trailer to move, you do not need a brake controller. A 4 flat wiring connector will provide the wiring for the lights that you will need, you will have to buy an adapter seeing as the rental trailers have no connectors on them. If you are going to buy a trailer, decide on the trailer (so you know what type of brakes you have) and then have the needed wiring and controller installed.
Q:Electrical system in a residential building. When we use any equipment on one phase the lights on that phase dim down but and the same time the lights on the second phase become brighter.

Wisdumb, no, this will not work. A ground provides a substantial electrical connection to *the ground* one way or another. In the U.S, to provide a ground for a radio or T.V. antenna, a long copper-coated stake is driven into the ground, and the area around it is covered in salt to assist conductivity (water or rain dissolves the salt into the surrounding soil). A thick wire is then attached to the copper stake and then run to the antenna and mast. This may give you some ideas, but may not be fully effective for your needs. Maybe an electrician will answer.
