- Q:I will be doing my first tile job soon. I will be removing/replacing the tile on my kitchen countertop. I have got most everything figured out with the exception of removing the existing tile on the backsplash. I believe the tile was placed directly over sheet rock (tract home). Any suggestions on how to remove the tile without too much damage to the sheetrock. If I have to do sheetrock replacement I don‘t think I could ever duplicate the texture now applied to the surronding sheet rock Thanks for any tips.
- Carefully remove any molding/cut any caulk between the tile and sheet rock using a razor blade knife. Remove the tile from the counter top then start working (prying) from the back splash tile bottoms using a wonder bar - oftentimes they'll pretty much pop right off. If you pry from the tile sides against the sheet rock, use a wood block under the pry bar to avoiding making indentations in/breaking thru the rock. Best to not get in a hurry. Never hurts to have a hammer and safety glasses near just in case. Have you considered extending the new back splash up to the cabinets above? Just guessing at the layout...

- Q:standard shiny, white 4x4 tiles. I want to redo the bathroom stalls, but heard from some people that it could take forever, and that i might end up messing up the the drywall? to me it sounds simple... just get a spatula or something of the sort and scrape off the tiles... is that how it goes or is it more difficult than that? has anyone out there done this? what tools would i need? what type of tile cutter do you suggest? i‘d like to replace the tiles with something bigger... maybe 10x10 tiles?
- Being that your house is pretty new most likely the tiles are on drywall and set using latex glue. However if they were set using thinset cement on drywall it will be a little harder or if the builder used the older method and set the tiles in cement on wire mesh, then it's a beast and everything must come down. Using a stiff putty knife start at the top and tap the putty knife behind the tiles and gently pry away from the wall. You will have some damage to the drywall, apply drywall compound, let dry sand down and paint with primer. NOTE: Be sure to wear eye protection and gloves, broken tile is very sharp. Also protect your tub by installing a piece of plywood on top of it to prevent falling tiles from damaging it. It's also not a bad ideal to just tear out the drywall and tile and install new backer board. Maybe a little more work money but In the long run it will make for a much better job. If you are going to use that large of tile you really should tear it out and use the cement backer board and thinset as your glue as these tiles are heavy. Rent a wet saw to cut the tiles.
- Q:Okay so i live in an apartment and i cant EVER get mant. out here to fix this... the stuff thats between the tiles is missing and it looks gross and then the white rubber stuff that sits between the tub and the tile is coming off in random places.... what is this stuff called and would i be able to fix this junk myself???The white stuff that connects the tubs looks like that white stuff they use to connect the base boards to the hardwood floor...
- The white stuff between the tiles is GROUT! Yes you can grout your own tiles easily! And the white stuff round the bath is silicone and you can do this easily too. Go to a DIY store and but the ready to use grout and apply it as per the instructions on the tub and the same with the silicone! Should not take too long and looks loads better when done! Also this protects against water damage to the walls etc. Good luck!
- Q:How do you show how to tile the plane?For example, if you use ‘+‘ (the plus shape)Do you merge/group the pluses ‘+‘ together to form a ‘+‘ plus shape again?Is that what tiling the plane means?Also, I am asked to determine all the basic rigid symmetries of this tiling (i.e. all shifts, flips and rotations). Do all three cases arise? No right? Just the shifts one?Then they also ask: Does this tiling have any symmetries of scale? (My question: How would you know this?)Thanks guys!Appreciate all your help.
- i've got by no skill heard of no longer having the flexibility to apply your computer on the airplane. you probable would desire to have the blue-the enamel off. some planes (purely some southwest and delta planes) easily have loose wireless on the airplane. i've got used my computer on the airplane till now its no longer a concern. you purely can't use it till you get severe adequate up. they're going to inform you so which you are able to use authorized electronics (that comes with laptops!)
- Q:Am I able to Lay down Ceramic/Porcelain Tiles directly on top of vinyl tiles. If So are there special material that I need to use.Even though the floor is in the basement, it seems that the vinyl is laid over wood, rather than concerete.Thanks for your answer.
- Now why would you want to cover up a natural wood floor? You can lay the tiles on top of it. you would have to strip the floor first of any wax build up. use an adhesive made for tiles then grout in the gaps. Doors will need to be shaved on the bottom so you will have a quarter inch clearance. Any Lowe's, 84, or home Depot will have helpful instructions along with the materials needed.
- Q:I wanted to put ceramic tile over the linoleum (in good shape) in our bathroom (floor is concrete). Can I do this or do I need to remove all the linoleum? Thanks
- My kitchen was tiled with ceramic over the linoleum..it has a concrete floor under it..it has no cracks or grout failure after 8 years. The tiler man just cut the curled edges like around the perimeter and he rough sanded the lino so the mortar would stick good. He said as long as the lino is still stuck good to the floor there is no problem tiling over it as long as it is prepped right. He must be right after all those years and still no problems! Removing old lino is a pain if it is still stuck really well.
- Q:can I surface over my white tile flooring granet??
- If they are vinyl tiles stuck to the subfloor and you put another substrate, such as 1/2 cement board, yes you can. If the vinyl tiles are over another type subfloor, such as luan, then no, the vinyl and its substrate must come up and then the proper subflooring put down over the subfloor, correctly and then tile. If its a self stick tile, over slab, it must come up. If its a glued down vinyl tile over slab and bonded well, there are proper ways to put ceramic over this. If your doing ceramic over ceramic, and the ceramic is down well and no signs of cracks or loose tiles, again there are proper ways of putting ceramic ( or granite) over ceramic. - Yes. I have tiled 10's of thousands of feet on green board. It's not my choice , but you know contractors go the cheapest way. Keep green board a 1/2 off the tub. It will last a lot longer.I also would not use adhesive it is messy and loses hold after a few years. I used plain OL' thinset. It holds great and is easy to wipe out of the joints.And don't let anyone tell you different. I set tile for 30 yrs.
