- It does seem like too much because it's a big time consumer to make it--takes hours upon hours upon hours. An average of 1 crane made every 5 minutes would result in 83.3 hours nonstop of crane making. That's off-putting. Alternatively it would be like him giving you a $600+ ring because he worked 83.3 hours at his $8/hr job. It's just weird to put in that much time for a 1st year anniversary.

- Q:I have to create a crane to support a dead load for my Engineering Technology class. It can be made out of only 1/8 inch balsa wood and wood glue, and is going to be graded by the ration of weight held to structure weight.Could anybody give me some suggestions as to how to go about designing this thing? - Not enough information because a crane can be many shapes and have various forms of anchoring or counterbalancing the load. If you are not allowed to anchor to a base and can't use weight to counter the load (if all balsa) then you have to create legs and lift the load between them - Basically the design will need to be triangles in truss to take the compression and prevent twisting and a long upper piece in tension to act like the cable you don't have. I would make two legs that are each 3 sided trusses that meet at the top and have a single rod across the bottom to keep them from spreading. Then I would make a longish beam with flat triangles for stiffness and use a few uprights to position the tension rod. Hang the weight on one end and push down on the other so it pivots on the short legs.

- The engine support is mainly for dropping the tranny, used before the car is up on a lift. The crane is for lifting the engine while the four wheels are on the ground. Most timing belts can be done without lifting the engine. Lifting the engine involves a very long list of procedures before actually yanking it up even a few inches. You have to disconnect and support the transmission, drain coolant and fluids and disconnect the hoses and wires, remove the engine mount bolts, maybe pull the radiator out, disconnect the A/C system lines, and remove the tranny and oil cooler lines, the coolng fans, shroud, hood, and so on. - Crane okorder / I don't really like the crane stock batteries only because they are a mess to put into the gun and taking them out is only a bit better. If you're not a spray-and-prayer, a small nunchuck/butterfly battery would do just fine.
- Q:How do Crane Motors Work?
- I'm not 100% familiar with this but this should be pretty close to the answer. Simple/standard crane motors work by applying power first through a rotating steel shaft into a gearbox. The gearbox allows the gearing ratio to be changed (to trade rotation speed for torque or torque for rotation speed). Another steel shaft carries the power out of the gearbox, again through rotation, to a spindle (think big thimble) around which steel cable is wrapped.
