Q:We laid tile in our shower and I used too much grout. Now I need to know how to get the grout lines even without damaging the tile. Any help would be appreciated.
Kudos to William After installing multiple thousands of sq. ft. of tile, and hundreds of gallons of grout, I so want to not offend you; but the WIPE process probably should have been more resolute on your part. Grout is Mortar/Cement essentially, and when doing tile grouting; the sponging might often be considered as a 3 stage process. Barely moist immediately after application; then as the grout sets, the sponging can increase in how wet you work it. The final result is often just DUST that can easily be wiped away. The issue should have been easy to relate to; as most tile has compressed edges; designed to allow wiping, but not strictly grouting flush with the tile face. In your case, and again; no offense; it seems it's beyond those stages. I guess I'm also curious as to the type of sponge you used. Knowledge is something we so often gain AFTER we NEED it. Certainly you'll have to use abrasives, and possibly a rounded paint knife blade or dinner knife. Nylon/woven scrubbers will likely be ineffective. With care; and if the tile is decent; scraping at the grout shouldn't scratch the tile; to any extreme. The deeper truth however; is that it may never look as it should; and almost as if the grout is squeezed out or bleeding onto the tile face. I do wish you well. Steven Wolf
Q:This is a first time tiling job. Does anyone have any tips to how to properly lay tile?
sorry i have know clue maybe you could research the Internet for some help.
Q:Thinking of putting tile on front porch. It has a couple minor cracks. Is there anything that I can put down so that the Tiledoesn‘t crack in the future.
You can tile over the concrete as long as the cracks have to shifted meaning on side of the crack is higher than the other. If that is the case you would need to stabilize the ground underneath first. The most cost effective way would be to have it slab jacked. That being said if there are just cracks first fill with fine silica sand then use and elastomeric caulking. DO NOT USE EPOXY!! This will just cause the concrete to crack in another place. Then you want to install a tile membrane on the concrete and then the tile on top of that. This will allow for some cracking and movement of the concrete below without the tile or grout cracking. Durarock or Tileguard make a tile membrane and can be found a any tile supply house. Hope this helps.
Q:why is waterproofing done before grouting?why do we need to let the mortar/adhesive dry before grouting?
You should use special green board for the shower. It is water resistant not water proof. This gives the best base for the tiles. You should leave the adhesive set up totally before grouting because the gases that are in the glue need a place to go. This includes thin set mortar because of the water vapor it out gases. Good luck
Q:I have some cracked squares in my kitchen. It is caused from the subfloor coming up in one section. What is the best way to remove old tiles and screw floor back down to and replace with extras that I have.I have the glue left over also to use on them.I know my husband had hard time getting them up once before.Tired of waiting for hubby to do it.Any easy ways for me to get tile up.
Self stick tile can be gotten lose by using a hair dryer, but I see you have glue left over so that presents a little problem. The way I would remove old tile here in N.C.is to get my heat gun ,it produces a little more heat than a hair dryer. Have a stiff 1 puddy knife handy and as soon as it starts getting loose ,start sliding the knife under the edge, and across the middle.Once removed apply just a small amount of adhesive spread it thin and replace the tile. You may also need to trim the edges of the new tile just a small amount-so thay will fit.Do your fitting before you apply your finishing glue. This is called dry fitting
Q:My bf and I are removing the tiles from the bathroom wall with a chisel and hammer; however, we live in an apartment building, so I was wondering if there‘s an easier way to remove the tiles by softening the grout around them.
No there isn't any way to soften the grout or thin-set. You just have to pry/bang them or smash the hole wall with a sledge hammer.
Q:What is Spanish Tile, why is it called Spanish Tile, and is this considered a good flooring option? And how does it feel in summer and winter (concrete slab floor below)?
Mexican tile, also known as Spanish tile, is a broad term used to describe a number of tile materials on the market, ranging from saltillo to hand made ceramic tiles sporting traditional Spanish and Mexican designs. Regardless of the type of tile you choose, you can count on Mexican tile to add a warm, pastoral, south of the border flair to any space in which you have it installed. Saltillo Tiles Saltillo tile is by far the most common of the Mexican and Spanish tiles found on the market. It is made from raw clay traditionally pressed by hand, and has an earthy, rough, almost terra cotta look to it. Depending on the firing, saltillo tiles range from deep yellow to deep orange in color, and come in a large variety of tile shapes, everything from your basic square to hexagonal and more elaborate patterns. Because of the nature of the clay and the more traditional form of production, these tiles are more porous than other ceramic tiles. As such, they should always be sealed with a quality sealant to protect them from stains and spills, which they would readily soak up if not protected. They will also need to be periodically re-sealed. Don't think of this as a downside, however. Like with hardwood, refinishing your saltillo will revive your floor, keeping it looking like new far past the time when other ceramics will have lost that newly installed look. On a final note, saltillo tiles get their name from the town in Mexico where they were originally, and still are, manufactured. If you get the real deal, and not an imitation variety, you can expect to find an odd chicken foot print or other animal print in your tiles when they are installed. Place these tiles in a prominent place in your tiling project for a great conversation starter and enjoy the rustic feel such imperfections will add to your finished product. Most tile floors, including Spanish tile, will feel cool to bare feet in both winter and summer.
Q:Complete DIY newbie here with an outdated bathroom that I want to make a master. The floor is covered in hideous 1x1 tiles. I will replace this tile with some 12x12 or 8x8. Any suggestions on how to get this stuff off?
How To Remove Mosaic Tiles
Q:I saw tiles on HGTV once for a bathroom (I want to use them for a kitchen backsplash) they are small tiles but they are attached to each other by a piece of mesh on the back, and you just peel the paper off the back and slap it on the wall, then grout over it. What are these, where can I find it, etc?
Mosaic tile sheets, and you should be able to find them at most home improvement stores, like Home Depot, etc.
Q:i have ceramic tiles that are loose hollow underneath
Many possible reasons why.. To little adhesive used ( usually a thin set not a grout) .Thin set to dry. Thin set to wet. Under supported tile such as incorrect under layment.Under layment installed incorrect. Incorrect adhesive for the job. Thin set skimmed over during setting and didn t bond to the tile. Installer didn t press and twist the tile into the thin set correctly. Some one walked on the tile to soon after setting and the bond is broke between the thin set and the tile. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there.
