Q:I am purchasing a LARGE MOBILE TRAILER to be my mobile workshop. I wonder which would best regarding fumes and general maintenance. Onan approx. 7000w is my preffered choice at this point.
well gas is a much cleaner burn and gives off no fumes but it does give off alot of moisture and you will find it will quite literally rain in your trailer on cold days. also when gas evapourates from liquid to gas it absorbs the ambient heat and freezes so in really cold weather the gas bottle freezes and the heater doesn work. the only real benefit from deisel is its freezing temp and the fact that you will always have some if you run out in the van but unfortunately they do need regular servicing as they do block the filters and start to pulse and when they do that they give out blowms of smoke which isnt pleasant
Q:I am buying a portable generator in order to power up to six, 500 watt halogen work lights to light up my horse arena at night. what are some things I should consider in terms of features that are needed in this application. Also, I don't want alot of bells and whistles, I need to keep as low cost as possible but still safe and quiet.
To the past comment regarding fuel consumption - You sated: For some reason, a big generator- say 6000 watts will go through twice as much gas as two 3000 watt generators! No idea why. Look it up if ya want. Totally true. Anyways, that ratio is far from accurate. Don t be misconstrued by not taking into account the fact that the listed specs for any unit describes fuel consumption based on load. All the listed specs show consumption-over-time, indicating that that consumption is during operation of the unit while at only 1/2 of the maximum rated load capacity. For your perusal, some generator specs taken from authorized Honda dealer web sites. Honda ~3500 (max watt) series Tank Size:6.2 Gallons Run Time (50% Load):16 Hours And the Honda ~6500 (max watt) series 6.2 Gallons Run Time (50% Load):10.4 Hours Anyways, if one were to crank up the Honda3500 from its 1/2 load of say 1750watts, to say about 3200watts, I would gamble the fuel consumption rate would spike significantly, and to the point where heat and exhaust would factor in largely; the 1/2 load operation for the 6500 series would yield 3250watts, incidentally. Even if there were so be some kind of (likely negligible if any) savings by having and utilizing 2 of the 3500 units at the same time, would it make up for the additional money spent on the cost of ownership of the 2 units, versus the single expense of the more powerful unit? (one of the 3500w units $1,600 while the 6500w costs about $2700+/-) Also, would someone want to occupy space with 2 units at once, either while in use or in storage? What about the chance of more things going wrong while running 2 units, let alone the increase in noise (et al) pollution. I would fathom the 6500w engine, and all moving components, would be much less taxed over time with respect to the similar output of the 2-unit scenariowhich sounds chaotic and in illogical, and was not even thought out.
Q:If global warming is as bad as Scientists say, two hours a month without power seems like a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. I'm sure theres a way to keep hospitals running and emergency services running. All shops would have to lock down I guess people would start rioting or something, but I would think there would have to be some sort of way to covertly have different towns and counties shut down for a couple hours discretely each monthmaybe at night when people are sleeping? Just a thought.
Of course it would depend on the power source. It is not the use of electricity that is causing problems to the global climate, but how it is generated.
Q:For what reasons are you in favor of using nuclear energy to generate electricity? For what reasons are you against nuclear power? consider the nuclear plant explosion in Japan.
Vladimer K nailed it. coal is an environmental disaster. wind farms are pretty, at least to me. the wind doesn,t always blow. the media storm surrounding the japanese nuc plants is helping news services make money. how much do you hear about the real disaster in japan? you know, the one that killed tens of thousands of people? i.,ll take nuc above other power sources any day.
Q:i have an old marine onan generator. It is a two cylinder diesel engine and the block is almost round on the bottom. I thought it was a cummins but im not sure. I know it is vague but can anyone help.
the other guys are right cummins owens onan. sounds like a 750 kw it is a good lighthouse, you find that it uses about .2 gl an hour of diesel. its some what hard on raw water impellers ( carry an Extra) and you'll need to change the mounts to stop some of the vibration other than that its been very reliable for me. it powers my 53 foot trawler no problems.
Q:I have an idea, if a steam locomotive's boiler was heated by a metal heater instead of a fire, how much less maintance would be needed as it does not produce any ash or soot because it has no fire.
And WHAT pray tell is going to heat your metal heater?
Q:Does anyone currently live off grid?If so, what type of alternate power system(s) are you using?Solar? ---(I think very expensive and in this part of the country, not enough sun.)Hydro-electric? ---(may be a viable choice if I have enough current running through my stream and or enough head from a waterfall)Wind? --- (If It is installed high enough and does not obscure.)Diesel Generator---(may be ok if underground, low speed, water cooled)We are planning to build a log home in up-state Pa. as a second home for now, but our primary residence in a few years. Thanks in advance for your answers!Newt
i don't know about your possibilities where you are but i would definitely suggest using as much natural lighting as possible and the alternate wood heating furnaces available
Q:Everyday I learn a little more about boating. I have asked a couple question on here. Looking back they seem a little stupid now! I want to purchase a boat capable of being a live-aboard and be able to do coastal waters as well as the inter-coastal waterway. So far what I think I've learned is that a trawler with a pilothouse or fly-bridge will offer the most usable space. I've also figured size is important when talking to marinas. Today's question is, what items would you desire to have? Generator, auto, electric or manual toilet, gas or electric stove and refrig., gas or diesel power, etc. Back to the book store tomorrow! Thanks in advance.
You start by asking yourself questions. What sort of lifestyle do I want/need? Do I care about resale value? What can I maintain myself? What sort of maintenance do I want to do? In general keep it simple. The less moving parts/systems the less that can break. Quality pays but buying it at discount also pays. Long term cost of operation is also important. You cannot do too much research. There is an overload of help forums on the web, some interactive, but a lot of reviews. The boat is a tool, make it fit the job and your hand.
Q:Hi everybody. well I buyed a welding machine, and I need a portable generator for use the welding machine, but I dont know the generator capacity to use it, if the welding machine is 50 to 250 amps, but I just use from 100 to 200 amps, Can I use a 6000 watss Generator? or I need more power?
About 15KW is needed to run a welder. Preferable is a diesel drive unit. Read the label plate on the welder, it will give the maximum draw needed for the supply side. Double that for the generator rating needed.
Q:For 100Kw generator, what will be minimum/ maximum loadfor its safe operation.
For most generators there is no minimum load, as it can even be zero loaded. For the maximum load you will need to look at the manufacturers specifications. Do you have the make and model of the generator?
