Q:i am getting my kitchen done over in 2 weeks cost is not a factor i cant decide to do tiles or harwood flooring which is better for the kitchen. i have two kids 2 and 5
Well First Off I'm Assuming The Kitchens Downstairs And You Sitting On A Concrete Sub Floor. If So You'll Need To Buy Engineered Wood (Wood Sitting Upon Cross Layered Plywood For Stability) Rather Than A Solid So It Can Be Glued Down And Actually Stay Down. Also You Would Need A Moisture Barrier Which Keeps Water Down Away From Your Wood Floor; Some People Don't Know That When It Rains The Water Soaks Into The Yard And Rises Under Your House Right Through The Concrete Sub Floor Which Can Be Deadly For Wood Flooring IE Warping And Sinking. Resistance Wise You Need To Look At The Janka Scale Which Is A Wood Hardness Scale Higher The Number The Harder IE Better. The More Polyurethane Aluminum Oxide Mix (All Finished Wood Has It) They Glaze Over Wood Will Make It That Much More Durable To Dents And Dings Not Scratches All You Need Is A Rock On Your Shoe To Scratch Wood;(Wood Is Harder To Replace Dented Pieces) So That Should Make You Think Of Color Medium Tone Woods Don't Show Scratches As Much As Dark And Light Woods Do. Also Wood Has Corers Mitered, Angled They Can Collect Dust In Them So I Recommend Buying Square Cut So They Are Flush Together So No Room For Dust. ----------- Porcelain Tile Is Cooked At A Higher Temp Cooking Out More Air In The Tile Making It A All Around More Durable And Practical Product Easier To Clean And Maintain You Can Seal The Grout To Keep It Clean And Buy A Hover Floor Mate I Love Mine It Vacuums And Scrubs It Clean With Any Kind Of Liquid Floor Cleaners And Dries It Also. They Also Have A Rating System Called PEI It Is Rated From 1-5 And Is Rated On Usability Where It Can Be Used 1 Is Wall Tile And 5 Is Commercial Use. You Will Have More Color Choices When It Comes To Tile To Match Cabinets And So On. Tile IS Also Easier To Replace If Broken They Chip It Out And Slide In A New One. ----- So After All That I Like Both Which Works For You.
Q:i know NOTHING about how to do it or what i need. Could someone just list all the tools and equipment i would need to buy or rent to complete this job myself? ie, tiles, tile cutter, ?, ?, ?... etc. thanks.
You'd probably need a tile cutter, wet-saw would be best if the job is medium or larger. Otherwise a manual tile cutter would work, just more labor intensive. Wet-saws can be bought at discount stores for as little as 20 bucks. Some tile nippers will help remove small bits of tile or small cuts, etc. Your prep work will call for maybe snap line to mark straight lines for tile placement. Using a stright-edge will also help keep your tile straight, and using the plastic grout inserts will ensure you keep a uniform thickness between your tiles (size of inserts depends on how wide your grout lines will be). You'll need a float or trowel to spread the mortar or mastic. Once it's spread, you set your tile one it while mortar is wet. You'll need a water bucket with large sponge to wipe down the tiles after they've been set. This not only cleans the tiles, but levels the grout to a final depth as well. Wipe it while wet and it's fairly easy - let it dry and it's almost impossible to smooth your grout. I suggest you search the web or get a book on tiling basics. The job is really straight-forward and fairly simple. Just familiarize yourself with the basic concepts and tips for doing the job. Tiling is far easier than most folks believe it to be. It's just a matter of rolling up one's sleeves and begining the job. Finally, you'll need six-pack of beer when the job is finished. Good luck
Q:I have water damage on a ceiling tile in my basement. The water damage is on a tile on the perimiter of the room. The water damage is adjacent to the room wall. However when I pulled the tile up I was surprised that I didn‘t find the source to any water above it. There was also no water damage on the tile where the angle bracket held the tile up. The water damage on the tile started in a straight line from the edge of the angle iron. Also there appeared to be a larger brown stain on the finished underside of the tile with a much smaller slightly damp appearance on the unfinished top of the tile. I‘m wondering if this means that my water source is not above the tile but in fact moisture from the room. However all of my other tiles around this one are dry with no damage. Thanks in advance.
you can paint these acoustic tiles, but you have to find the source of the leak. What is directly above it? Could the kids have done it from fooling around ? (they shook a soda can or a water balloon?) You should be able to tell if the source was from the room or above the tile (from the inside). Good luck.
Q:How to seal new Porcelin Tile
Porcelain tile is not porous so sealing is not recommended and can make it slippery like a sheet of ice...You can seal the grout in between though.
Q:Chinese tiles before the top 30 ranking
Now do not advocate tile ranking, as long as it is pure Guangdong Foshan brick is not like OEM, cost-effective on the line.
Q:We have a basic, square foot tiles - rough ceramic floor, standard grade in a white-ish shade (HATE IT!). It is always dirty looking! Nothing keeps it clean. Can we stain it or paint it like people do cement floors??? Anyone done this? How? Thanks!
Accidentally staining or on purpose staining it is very hard to get anything to stick to ceramic tiles. Any paint even epoxy will wear off and look shabby very quickly. One way to distract people from the plain white is to take out tiles in a pattern and replace them with some colorful tiles that will draw people's attention from the main color. You can take out those tiles by using a hand grout saw to take off the grout surrounding the tiles you want to remove. Then smash those tiles in the center with a pointed centerpunch and a small hammer. Work your way out toward the edges of the smashed tile until you have cleared their entire square. That is where you are going to cement-in and grout the new colorful ones. It is time consuming but it will upgrade the floor and make people forget the basic off-white.
Q:The bathroom tile in my recently purchased house isn‘t finished. The previous owner used floor tile to surround the tub; he/she left many pieces of tile unfinished, but luckily left us a stack of the tiles so we could finish it off. However, we don‘t have an unlimited supply of these tiles, so we‘d like to get it right with as few tries as possible!I‘m wondering: -I need to fit the tub faucet and knobs within two 12 square tiles. What‘s the best way to measure the placement of the fixtures? Is it possible to make some sort of template that I could transfer to the tiles? -Can I make the cuts for the fixtures using a hacksaw-type tile saw blade, or should I buy a tile drill bit? (I realize it rather depends on where the fixtures fall within the tile-- but if I don‘t need to buy both, I won‘t waste my money. )Thanks!
I'll try to answer this in layman's terms as best i can.. Take one tile and hold it exactly square with the tile just above the faucet Knob. Take another tile and put the edge of it dead center in the middle of the faucet knob(this will take another person to lend a helping hand obviously). The other edge of the piece of tile you are holding on the center of the faucet knob will come to exactly where you want to put the center bit of the tile hole cutter so mark that with your pencil take the piece your holding square on the tile above the faucet knob down and cut your hole using a tile hole saw bit that is slightly larger in diameter than the faucet knob.. Sorry if this sounds complicating but i think once you start doing it you'll see how easy it is.. Good luck..
Q:I am replacing the tile in my kitchen and having trouble getting the old tile up. The tiles are 12 inch squres, I‘m not sure what they are made of, something like linoleum I think. When it was installed it had pre-glued backing and I would like to know the easiest way to remove it. THANKS
Both 1 2 offer valid sugestions. You will need a floor scraper. The heat gun is good tool for the tile removal but don't strictly depend on it for any adhesive residue. Envision scraping heated adhesive. Similar issue will arise if you use solvents. Not knowing what the substrate is, and/or what affect any removal will have on it; you may have to skim over with thinset. Steven Wolf
Q:is tiled floor the best flooring for people with pets?
Maybe. It all depends on the nail size and the type of flooring. My father is a professional tile layer. And I know from his words that if your pets mess on the tile, the grout will get stained. Then, you will have to scrub them or re grout them. It really isn't good for the tile either when it gets scratched. It can turn into a crack then split! So, Linoleum May work. But, definitely not tile! Good luck! =]
Q:is there any benifits to having the tiled ceilings? please answer ASAP
The real reason is sound. Lots of kids, lots of little noises. A sound dampening surface helps. If you notice, many school libraries had carpeting for the same reason.
