Most of the permanent generators we install down here in Tx are natural gas powered that are connected to the utility. As far as name brand try the Kohler and Generac websites. These sites will also give you the gas consumption rates for the different units. They have alot of good info on sizing. Being as you have all electric it will need to be a decent sized unit to back up the whole home. You could always choose to backup only certain circuits and appliances to bring the demand load down and in turn bring down the size of the gen as well. I've installed 17KW to 100KW(Big Custom Home) units on homes. An automatic transfer switch comes with most stand alone generators. These will sense the utility power drop below a certain voltage and tell the generator to start and will automatically switch to generator power. When the utility power comes back on it will automatically switch back over and stop the generator. Most generators will also test themselves weekly. You can set the time and day for this test.One thing I would recommend is the importance of maintenance. Most generators need to be serviced 2 times a year. I've seen homeowners who did not have a good service plan in place be stuck in the dark when the generator did not work or did not work for long.

You want to connect a 4 kw load to a 6 kw generator. As long as the 6 kw (6,000 watts) rating of the generator is accurate it should power the lamps fine. You're only using 66% of the generator capacity. There aren't any significant losses to worry about and no point in doing any calculations. They were done for you in the kw rating of the generator. Just don't use any extension cords that are too small for the lights.

The problem i have run into is that i don't know how to determine how long tha tank can last with only those values, i have a feeling im missing something very obvious here. My friend has a Westsail 32. He powers it with a AroGen 6 wind generator and two 125watt solar panels. So what does this power? 34 inch screen, with Satellite TV, laptop computer, mac mini computer, playstation 3, xBox, 32 inch monitor connect to a power mac tower with 4 very large hard drives busing all night long (Lol), LED through out the boat, stereo system, water maker, water pumps, and other miscellaneous stuff. Of course this equipment is not all on at one time but he has had it all turn on once before just to see if he could do it. What you need to have with the wind generator and solar panels is a large bank of batteries. Typically about 4 times the capacity of your daily consumption. The reason for this is to make your batteries last longer. Up to 7 years before you need to replace them. If you only have one bank you may need to replace them yearly. We did that and it get expensive. It's key to have at least 3 to 4 times the capacity. You'll also need an inverter. It take your DC batteries and creates AC for all your electronics. Yes you can by DC appliances and some of your navigation equipment will run on DC, but you'll find is cheaper to buy AC appliances and you'll also have more selection. He has a inverter with the brand name Outback which we found one of the best. It's pricey, but it has a built in computer that thinks about everything. It's great for when you forget to flip some damn switch, it will take steps to protect it's self and/or pull power from some other source. It even helps you make coffee in the morning. If you have a natural gas pipeline then that's what I would use. Nat gas burns the cleanest, no soot, no mess, no fuel filters to clean, the motor oil lasts longer, no tanks to get water and gunk in. no fuel stabilizers needed, no fuel spills and no tank certifications, etc. With a pipeline you won't have to go shag and store fuel and you won't run out. Even in a wide spread power failure the nat gas is usually not affected. If you have to lease or rent a nat gas tank THEY have to certify it against leaks.

You will probably found a label on generator with those Information: Ex. volt (maximum excitation voltage) Ex. amp (maximum excitation amperage) Your AVR output must exceed those specs. If generator is brushless type in most cases it does. Also input voltage of AVR must be the same as output of generator (ex. 110V110V, 220V220V). If generator is triple phase then you can do the same (ex. 380V380V, 440V440V) but if generator have output in star formation then you can use node for a smaller voltage of AVR (ex. 380V220V, 440V253V). If generator work in parallel operation (usually marine main generators does) then things get complicated. In this case AVR is good to support current transformer to make generator more elastic under load fluctuations and match other generators in the same circuit.
