I am not sure what you are really asking about the operation of a diesel generator. You start the engine and connect the electrical load to the generator buss. If you are connecting to a grid or existing power system then you need to match the frequency of the grid. As to advantages and disadvantages, you need to state what you want to compare it to and how large the generator or system is.

Do a search for methane (CH4) generation. There are many cattle farms that capture the methane gas from animal waste to power generators on their farms. There's a big dairy in Pennsylvania that does this, but I don't remember the name of the farm. I know methane isn't H2, but it's easier than pure hydrogen.

That's an interesting question. They vary so much, dont know if there is an average speed that would be of any relevance. I cant really improve on what has been said except to add a few comments. as you might have guessed acceleration, all you can possibly get is very important at times. Newer locomotives have taken most of the fun out of switching, too much computer controls. With the older ones, that is what made the difference between just an engineer and a hoghead. 8 throttle (all you got) full independent brakes, relaese the brakes and close the generator field switch all at once was about the quickest move, not sure the speed you would get in 4 seconds but it would be too fast for a switchman to get on. When I started on the Milwaukee in the early 70's, we still had the old electrics. If a switchman started getting cocky an engineer would make him a bet, he would say you stand right here at the front of the engine and i will take off, if you can catch the rear footboard I'll give you $10.00. With a light engine he couldnt do it, those things took off like a rocket, they didnt have to build up any amperage waiting for the deisel engine to rev , the full line voltage was immediatly available overhead. P.S., this has been very difficult for me not to be at least a tiny little bit of a smarta**, takes a lot of self control. LOL

When talking about an electric generator you have to include the quality of the driver as well as well as the control system. If the generator/driver is large enough and the controls are of sufficient quality to maintain the voltage and frequency then it doesn't matter what the power is used for.It will be more than adequate to safely supply AC units or just about any other equipment.

Well there's plenty to talk about the environmentwhen you think of how many plastic bottles are used each yearyou could take about recycling patterns, effectiveness of recycling bottles, how manufacturers have made more efficient bottles, etc. As far as health something I find intriguing is the topic of harmful chemicals that come into the water you drink from the bottling plastic. A lot of it is based on limited research though, so it might not be the best topic. A more practical health aspect to talk about would be the minerals or lack thereof in bottled v. tap water.

Interesting that you think there should be expansion of solar panels, but not batteries. Typical of global warming denier thinking. Obviously battery technology is improving considerably. Just look at what's happened to cell phones in the last couple decades. When fossil fuel runs out, batteries will be able to take up the slack. The plant is currently on battery backup's which I assume are relatively large and cant just be switched out to maintain the cooling system. Is it just an issue of supplying enough power for the cooling system? Couldn't they park the the USS Ronald Reagan off shore there and borrow some power until stabilized, considering you could power a sizable city off its reactor?
