Q:I‘m installing new tile in my bathroom and had a few questions.1. I understand that I‘m supposed to remove the toilet prior to laying the tile. So I remove the toilet, lay new tile, and then put the toilet on top of the tile? Does this mean that the toilet will sit on the tile? If so, won‘t there be a very little gap where the tile and toilet meet? Are you supposed to seal this gap? Or, do you cut the tile around the shape of the bottom of the toilet and tile around it?2. Same question with the vanity. I‘m replacing my old vanity. Do I have to remove the old vanity, lay tile in the whole area where the old vanity was, and then install the new vanity on top of the tile? Again, what about the small gap? Does it need to be sealed? What do you seal it with?3. How do you remove the old vanity? Do you simply disconnect the plumbing, remove the screws holding it to the wall, and pry it from the wall?Any comments, suggestions, or advice are appreciated.
As far as the toilet, remove the toilet and tile as close to the flange as possible. You will need to make a few cuts in your tile. When it is time to reinstall the toilet use two wax rings one with the plastic flange and one without. When you are done but a small bead of caulk around the base of the toilet and tile. As for your vanity, you can do it either way. You can install it first and then after tiling install a small shoe molding around the base. If you tile first you will still need a shoe molding. In the bath, it is a good idea to caulk all the baseboards and around cabinets so in the event you ever get water on the floor it doesn't seep under the floor.
Q:I just finished grouting my tile yesterday I want to remove the haze with vinager should I let the grout cure for three days, then seal it and then scrub the whole floor including going over the grout lines (which would be then sealed) scrubbing with a sponge and avoiding the non cured grout is working but is taking far too long
Know what works best? Don't use any moisture at all to remove haze--You'll have to do it 2 or 3 times to totally remove the haze. Let the haze dry on the tile, then polish it off with a dry soft terry cloth--It may create a little dust in the air, but it works really well. Also, wait about a month or so before sealing your grout lines.
Q:I‘m assisting my friend with a property renovation and I need to know with tiles to buy. Can you guys help me out?
I trust you're talking about flooring for a retail situation. Any decent floor tile works fine, I'd suggest something with a rough texture, for safety in case of wet situations -- spills, rain being tracked in, etc. Outlet stores can be found which offer excellent value, but limited selection -- retail finish out usually is heavily price driven, so look for bargains. Large tile for large spaces, smaller but not too small for smaller spaces. If you buy 2 different sizes (must be same thickness), you can easily make a pinwheel pattern by placing a big tile on the floor then putting small tiles around the 4 corners, and set big tile into the created corners (play with them a bit, and you'll figure it out). If you use a pinwheel, calculate the number of each tile needed by figuring the ratio of sizes. You'll need an equal number of pieces each size, allow 1/8 to 1/4 inch mortar joints, and remember grout costs more per sq ft than tile, and larger joints require more cleaning. Use darkish grout to minimize cleaning issues.
Q:What are the pros and cons for using porcelain tiles or ceramic tiles?
From a design perspective, it depends on the application. Porcelain tiles have the color permeated throughout the tile. That means, for example, if you use them say around a bathtub deck as a back splash the side of the tile that is exposed will have the same design on the front. With ceramic tile, it will have the color of the clay which means you have to use a finish tile or edge tile to conceal that because it does not look nice. Because the pattern goes all of the way through a porcelain tile, some people feel it gives a more realistic replica of certain stones than ceramic does. And, there are claims that porcelain tiles are more durable than ceramic.
Q:I thought that bathroom floor tiles were thicker than the bathroom wall tiles, is this right?
Thickness has nothing to do wither they go on the walls or floors. Generally speaking floor tiles are thicker , but not always.. There are several factors in determining if a tile can be used on a flor or not. All tiles can be used on walls but not vise versa. Some determining factors that dictate if a tile can go on the floor is tinsel strength ( how much pressure it can take before breaking in a special test),scratch and slip resistance ..These are 3 of the main factors that tile must be rated in before they can be allowed to be used on a floor. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there.. GL
Q:im looking for bright green bathroo tiles, as im redoing my bathroom , but i can‘t seem to find them anywhere please help!!!!!!
American Oleans Satin Glo ( matte finish) and Satin Brights bright , shiny ) line had some bright green tiles . Also Interceramic and Dal Tile had a line of them. At one time Florida Tile had some too. Google all these manufactures and look at their lines. Each site will have a store locator to find a realtor neatest you by putting in your zip code. If your looking for something as an accent. Try to google Ocean Side Glass. They have a nice iridescent line of tile in greens also.. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q:I have large granite tiles on my counter that don't go all the way to the edge. Ceramic ones complete the lip. Unfortunately, to get my old dishwasher out from under the counter I had to break some. How do I remove what's left of them without damaging the really nice granite ones? Is there anything else I need to be careful about?
Visit your local flooring company for visual help in understanding how to remove the tiles. There are several tools available that have been developed for just this type of work. Be prepared however to loose a fair amount of the currently undamaged tiles, how many depends upon how careful you are combined with how well they were installed in the beginning. At this point you are hoping for a poor job. Remember however that you can cut down any tiles that you have the pieces of and make a new mosaic out of them. Broken tiles are never a complete loss.
Q:ok, I am grouting my ceramic tile in my kitchen and I sponged the tile when I was done and waited for everything to dry. I buffed the dry grout off of the tiles and I noticed that there is dry grout on the tiles and I can‘t get it off. Is there anything I can buy to take the grout off of the face of the tiles before I seal them? Please help.
I just tiled my kitchen too. I wiped them down a million times before I sealed them. Some parts I had to sponge more then others. I dont know how long you let the tiles sit beofre you grouted...I waited about a day. Then grouted and wiped a million times. I then waited about 3 days before sealing the grout. It looks pretty good. If its only a few tiles, try scrubbing a bit harder over that area. The sealer might help too once you get it on there.
Q:I just remodeled a home and I am having a hard time cleaning the newly istalled tile. I mop and mop but the tile still looks dirty. I guess its all the powder and sand that was created by the remodeling. Am I supposed to use some type of acid or buffer?
That happened to the tile in my utility room also. I am going to try the muriatic acid Good Luck to you also Nesssssssssst
