PORTLAND CEMENT
Portland cement is the most common type of cement in general use around the world, used as a basic ingredient of concrete, mortar, stucco, and most non-specialty grout.
It is a fine powder produced by heating materials in a kiln to form what is called clinker, grinding the clinker, and adding small amounts of other materials.

- Use Hardibacker and seal the seams with tape and thinset. Use thinset to set the tile using 1/4 spacers. I have used and recommend that you use a tile sealer to seal the slate prior to grouting and to use epoxy grout. The grout is more difficult to install but requires no sealers which need to be redone at least once a year in a shower and is well worth the initial time and effort. Be sure to read and follow the directions on the grout bags to ensure a uniform color and good grout set. MT C

- Both types expand the palate. The difference is that remove able ones are used to obtain a smaller amount of expansion than a cemented one. The one that is cemented can engage the teeth in a more rigid manner and can be more effective in obtaining extra width. The cemented ones usually work quicker and compliance is not a problem. Compliance relates to the tendency for people who have removable ones to take them out. When they are out they are not expanding. Each case is different. Some require cemented ones and others can get away with removable ones.

- Q:I have a cement porch upstairs. There are cracks in it, and they are leaking water into the unit downstairs ceiling. What can I use to waterproof seal the cracks. It's snowing like heck now too. So please let me know if the stuff can be applied now.
- I would use that liquid cement. It comes in a tube like caulking and yes it is waterproof and you can use it now. When it stops snowing,shovel off the porch. Let the sun dry it and get your material and caulking gun and over due the cracks with the liquid cement. Trowel out a nice flat surface. Good luck.

- Q:I have a question about subfloor and tiling.. our kitchen and dining room are connected, and our dining room has hardwood floor and the kitchen just has a lineolm currently.. we are remodeling our kitchen and tiling.. we know the correct thing to do is lay down a cement backer board, our question is, do we take up the current subfloor? im afraid if we dont that once we put the cement board down and then the tile down, THEN the kitchen floor will be higher than the dining room.. so, again, taking the current subfloor off, and just seeing the original floor boards that run diagonally (i know it does that from looking from the basement up).. and then lay the cement board on there, and then the tile, can that be done?? - You need the subfloor for strength, you cannot pull it up. They do have a friendly moulding that also dresses up the area from the kitchen to the dining room, that stops you from tripping.
