- Q: It‘s been a while since I have done tile, but I remember we used to use sheetrock to cover the floor or for back splash wall, however I don‘t remember what it was used for. Is there special cases when you need to use it or do I need to use it every time? What is the purpose to use the sheetrock?Please help. Thanks.
- You never use a sheetrock to do tile. Only as a normal wall covering to be painted in a non wet area such as a back splash or a wainscot. Then that you can tile over. You may have used a product ( or one similar) called Denshield. This is a 1/2 special backer board you can use on floors and you work with it just like a sheet rock. because it was a light weight fiberglass impregnated gypsum board. Just like the 1/2 cement board you could use it on floors and wall where moisture is present and you installed it in a thinset bed of mortar prior to nailing it down. Sheet rock is a general term for dry wall, used for regular walls to be painted. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL

- Q: I am tiling my kitchen and My house was a prefab. and OLD. The plywood used was 1/2 (I measured it). what thickness of backboard/cement board should I use for under the tile and on top of the plywood? I was thinking 1/2 backerboard/cement board so there is 1 of subfloor under the tile. Do you think this is enough? Also, I am tiling around my cabinets, what do I do about the dishwasher? Do I tile around it? If I tile under it, it won‘t fit in the spot then. I was going to tile around it... I do have room to tile under the fridge though. There is space above.

- I tile every day of my life, and while not a major fan of sealers, I get it that many are, in the belief that they retard dirty and mold, etc. It will be a life long, occasional task however. It makes little difference where the tile was produced, what matters in your case is whether or not the tiles are glazed in the firing process. One would hope any contractor holding any level of intelligence would not install unglazed tile in a bath or kitchen. IF they are glazed, sealing is a useless procedure. There is no need to seal tile that has been glaze fired, essentially turning the surface into glass, NON porous. - The product that is made for this that few people, even tile setters, know is Sulfamic Acid. This is available at Home Depot in the tile department. Its in a small yellow/orange plastic jar and is not caustic like other acids. It will remove thinsets andf grouts and is also great for general cleaning of tile.
- Q: I almost bought porcelin tile but I know ceramic tile is much more popular, what about the endurance factor between the two? I want to get something that will last and still look good.Does anyone know about flooring, and could tell me which is best?
- Ceramic tile is more popular simply because it is less expensive and easier to cut and work with. But if you want the look, porcelain is the way to go. Italian porcelain tile is by far the best on the market. Keep in mind that whether it be ceramic or porcelain tile, if you drop something on it that's heavy or hard, both may crack or chip... As for the lasting effect, I prefer ceramic tile on the floor and porcelain tile on walls. Just remember that you can NEVER put wall tile on the floor as it will ALWAYS crack because it isn't strong enough. There are grades to look for : 1 and 2 are wall tiles and 3 to 5 (though I prefer 4 to 5) are floor tiles. Enjoy your new flooring!
