- Q: Hi I was with a friend and her family and they kept referring to some birds at a lake as cranes. I know for sure that some birds there were Great Blue Herons. When I here crane I think of a bird from Asia or something. Anyway these birds were white and I thought maybe they were egrets or something, and this is in Ohio. I'm not looking to prove anyone wrong, I'd just like to find out about cranes- are there cranes in America and if so could these birds be cranes? Thanks!

- Q: I'm researchign for this demonstration speech on origami and uncovered a legen that says in the Japenese custom if you fold 1000paper cranes you are granted a wish. Just wondering, has anyoen ever tried this? and the outcome?I'm goign to do it this weekend!
- my daughter's art club did this for a hospital not to long ago...they made 1300 paper cranes and hung them from the ceiling in one of the hospital wings. I don't know about being granted one wish, but it made the patients happy and smile no matter how sick they were. I've heard the paper crane was some how connected with leukemia, so she made one for a friend of mine's son (he is only 7 and has battled this disease for 2 years) and it made him happy to know that someone who doesn't know him would make something like that for him.

- Q: I was looking at the glidecam hd1000 for my canon vixia hv40, but now I think I'm more interested in a crane (jib).I was thinking of the advance digital 6 ft. crane. I would replace some of the plastic parts for metal.I'll be using it to film sketches and short films. - It depends on the shots you want to get. The $370 HD-1000 Glidecam handheld stabilizer works fine for short sequences when walking or even running. But for the most part, if the camera is going to stay in one place, then a tripod is better. Back to the Glidecam handheld stabilizer... it is small and once set up (counter weights) you can leave it as-is and easily/quickly mount/dismount the camera as needed. Generally, it will be used at eye level so the camera's LCD panel can be used for framing shots. The Advanced Digital Crane stand ($60) and Crane ($150) will take a while to set up assuming it is taken apart after each work-day. It is fairly large and can get to heights the handheld Glidecam cannot get to. When the camera is mounted to the crane stage, you will not be able to see what the camera sees very well, assuming you are at the side of the crane where the counterweights are. You will want to use a monitor. I use a Sony portable DVD player with AV-out connected to the camcorder's AV-out. The rechargeable battery life on the portable DVD player is quite long when the DVD motor/player mechanism is not used. An RCA-ended extension cable will be needed. (for what it is worth, I have a Kessler 8 foot crane and use their heavy-duty tripod with their Hercules head). My cameras have a LANC port (I don't think the HV40 does). This allows start/stop recording, focus and zoom control from when I am standing back at the counterweights. Since the HV40's wireless remote sensor is at the front of the camcorder, controlling the camcorder with the wireless remote behind the camera is challenging. So... which would I recommend? It is relatively easy to get eye-level type shots (just use a tripod). Even with motion/movement, use of a wagon/dolly/chair/back-end of a truck/etc... is fairly simple. But getting the high level extended crane shots... that makes things interesting because it is a perspective most people don't see every day...

- Hot rails running along side the beams Hot shoes on the crane make contact with the hot rails and slide along the hot rails. Hot rails mounted to the beams by insulating bells. The hot rails can be anywhere in size from trolley wires to rails the size of railroad track rails. AC cranes are usually 3 phase so they will have 3 hot rails. DC cranes will usually have just 2 hot rails. Main disconnect/lock out feeds hot rails. It is usually fused but can also be just a disconnect switch. The same arrangement also is used on the crane's trolley. But in the case of the trolley one set of hot rails feeds the trolley motor. One set of hot rails feeds the main hook {big hook} motor: One set of hot rails feeds the auxiliary hook motor {little hook} motor. If the crane is also used as a Mag crane {Electro magnetic can be used} it will also have a set of hot rails going to the trolley for the magnetic

- I'm sure they are nothing to be afraid of. Despite their common names, crane flies do not prey on mosquitoes as adults, nor do they bite humans. You have a higher chance of being stung by a bee than being bitten by a crane fly. Just think of them a different way. Just think they are regular flies. Crane flies are a food source for many birds. They are also susceptible to fungal infections and are a food source for many other insects. Try getting a bird if you want to. :]
- Q: Which one is a better investment? I can get both for 200dollars
- Probably an engine crane (engine hoist). Engine support you still need to lift the engine for the engine support. You hardly ever need to maneuver the engine to do a timing belt. Edit: I have one of the portable lifts what some refer to as a cherry picker. I've never had the need for an engine support.
