- A solar panel is just a collection of solar cells all wired up in parallel and series to provide a useful voltage. Typical solar cells only provide half a volt, maybe less, so usually you put 2 of them together to get a 6v solar panel or 24 of them to get a 2v panel. Solar cells are made in various ways, the most popular are silicon solar cells which are made with a chunk of silicon with a P-N junction in the middle and contacts on either side. When a photon of light comes in, the energy of the photon is converted to electrical energy. Individually, photons contain a tiny amount of energy, but when you have a solar cell in the sunlight, billions and billions of photons hitting it constantly create a useful amount of electrical energy. Solar panels are incredibly simple!

- Q:Im looking at making a self build iPad solar panel charger, Is it possible to get a small solar panel, a battery to hold charge and then a USB output? nothing fancy, just power in and power out?
- Sure it is possible. There are even commercial products that do that. I have a solar cell phone charger. But it is not able to fully charge the phone battery. I am not sure why but I suspect the voltage it puts out is too low. In other words, it is a poor design. It is certainly possible to make a better design, but maybe not easy. You can damage a battery by over charging it, so just increasing the voltage is not the solution. You need just the right voltage and current.

- I am not sure about your question ? If your Q is, what is the solar panels current output, it is 8.73A regardless of the load. If the Q is, How much extra current is available in this circuit, the answer is 3.58A ( 8.73 - 4.32-.83= 3.58)

- By an utility approved qualified individual. The utilities really hate it if their maintenance people working on the power lines gets electrocuted because some solar powered inverter didn't shut off when they shut the line off.
