Q:How is steel coloured?
Steel can be plated(Chrome),Blackened(Black Oxide),Powder coated(color of your choose).All of this is done to prevent rust.All of these aforementioned processes can be worn off through being used.I suggest polished Stainless steel.
Q:Disadvantages of stainless steel?
For horse stirrups the main disadvantage to stainless steel is the manufacturing cost. Stainless steels tend to work harden, and are subject to their own peculiar forms of corrosion, but I see little implication to either of these factors when used as a stirrup iron or a safety latch. Stainless steel is also subject to self welding, or galling, this would be of no concern for the irons, but could result in the pivot of the safety latch freezing (I have never known anyone to ride with the safety latch closed, however).
Q:Damascus steel knife?
Ok, lets define what is Damascus steel. The modern Damascus is basically any steel that shows a pattern. Patterns are accomplished by 1. manipulating the crystal structure or 2. by combining 2 or more different alloys together. The blade you are looking at is referred to as a pattern welded blade. Damascus is only as strong as it's base components + heat treat and design. The strongest will be obtained by combining high carbon and low carbon steels. I do this by using steel cable. The patterns aren't real bold but are interesting none the less. To break it you must brake the hard steel and tear through the soft iron. The laminated stuff works the same way. For greater edge holding I use all high carbon, varying alloy content from simple carbon to chromium/nickle alloys. These are what you normally find in pattern welded blades. A fine pattern that has many lamination's crossing the edge will offer the best edge holding. Properly done one can get the DCE or damascus cutting effect where the soft layers wear away faster than the hard layers almost making the blade self sharpening. Is that blade good? Buy it if you like it, it won't compare to a well made hand forged blade but is much cheaper. sorry for the overload.
Q:Cast iron Vs. Stainless steel?
For strength, cast iron (that's why OEM exhaust manifolds are made out of it). For performance, stainless steel. For one, stainless steel headers are lighter than cast iron ones. Then they come in multiple arrangements, (4-2-1 or 4-1 for 4 cylinder motors). The down fall is strength. Hit a pot hole with the collector of a stainless steel header. It's going to have a nice dent in it.
Q:Does stainless steel turn brown or bronze?
I would say don't wear it in the shower because it will tarnish and it could rust.
Q:What's better: Steel or Alloy bike wheels?
Alloy wheels are definitely the standard on most bikes nowadays, ive always bought rims from mavic and they have always taken a battering. In fact the last two bikes i owned both cracked while the wheels were almost perfect! Different types of rims can be bought depending on how you ride and of course the more you pay generally the better the rims. Also alloy wheels will be a lot lighter and corrosion resistant . Q:Origin of the steel guitar in Country music?
As I don't know for sure I have a couple of really good guesses. I would say either Jerry Byrd of Ernest Tubb's Texas Troubadours or Don Helms of Hank Williams' Drifting Cowboys. I can tell you for sure that Bud Isaacs was the first player to use a pedal steel guitar on a hit recording: Slowly by Webb Pierce in 1953.
Q:where is cold formed steel framing used?
It will vary from location to location. A possible way of telling is how the material is joined. If the material is riveted together it is likely cold rolled. If the material is welded then its probably normalized steel (possibly annealed but less likely). Cold rolling increases the yield strength of the material so less of it is needed. However, it also make the material more brittle. Welding creates defects in the region surrounding the weld and these are more likely to grow and cause failure in a cold rolled steel than a normalised or annealed steels. In addition the heat from the welding will change the microstructure that was deliberately introduced by the cold rolling process resulting in a localised drop in yield strength. Normalised and annealed steels are more ductile and tougher than Cold rolled steel but they have a lower yield strength. Because they are tough and ductile they are less sensitive to crakcs and defects so welding won't lead to as big a reduction in strength. Another possible consideration is the environment they are used in. Steels exhibit a transition temperature (actually more like a range) where they go from behaving like a ductile material to a brittle material. A well known example of what this can cause are the Liberty ships in WW2 (Supply vessels from the US to the UK). These were made by welding together sheets of cold rolled steel to form one continuous Hull. Unfortuantely the transiton temperature of the steel taht was sued was around 4 degrees while the Baltic Ocean is about 0 degrees. As a result small cracks would grow and then when the reached a critical size they would tear through the ship at the speed of sound in the metal (1500m/s) and these massive cargo ships would literally snap like twigs. So, if the steel is being used somewhere really cold its unlikely to be Cold rolled too.
Q:How would you encase steel in concrete?
OK, here is my take on it Take equal lengths of steel wire, one is going to bare, one is going to be encased You will need a tension rig, simply this will be one fixed end and one end you can hang a weight down. For the test you will affix one end and string it between to supports with one end hanging off, which is where you will put the weight. The put a ruler where the weight is, so as the weight pulls the wire down (after it is hot) you can time the stretching. lastly you need a place to put a controlled fire under the wire, I'd reccommend something tame like a camping stove OK, got a test rig and two pieces and a way to test. You'll have to play with different fires and weights to see what works best Putting the concrete on the wire is a tricky one since you don't want the concrete to take the load. Get a tub or dish of approriate size and put some wet concrete in it, partway up. Take one of the wires and coat it with wax or something like it that is soft. Place the wire, with the ends sticking out, in the concrete tub and pour more on to cover it. Let this whole thing harden. You might want to have a specific shape to the tub so it comes out a certain size Now, you have an uncoated wire and an coated one. Be careful you don't pull the wire out of the concrete Another way to do this would be to use joing compound, which is a type of mortor (cement). You can buy it a home depot or such. Mix it up as thick as possible and just cake it on the wire and let harden. You can shape the coating using saran wrap or something maybe. I my world we call this stuff monster mud, its used to shape things for Halloween props like robes into figures. Its quite sturdy when done When you are ready to test just hook each part up with the same fire and weight and take readings of stretch vs. time
