Q:Does anyone know about steel framed houses?
That's a first for me. The only draw back to a steel frame home is the cost, not only in material but also in labor. They do make a great home with proper installation. Make sure your contractor and framing crew have experience with metal frame construction. There is some differences in building codes, etc. Good Luck and happy building.
Q:Are steel doors insulated?
Not all doors are created equal so maybe it has insulation but doubtful. 20yrs ago they didn't put insulation into doors and a solid steel door is not light and would rip the hinges off. They do not put solid steel doors into homes Your door is steel sheet metal thin and the door is hollow core air in between them that's why its cold A solid wood door with proper insulation around it and weather stripping under it is more efficient in preventing heat loss The only purpose of a steel door is security, harder to kick in a steal door, which is the reason why it was installed. The old owner probably got the house robbed and they kicked in the original flimsy door. So it was recommended that he use a steel door. Steel does not insulate against hot or cold it absorbs it. Hence why its cold, no amount of weather stripping will prevent heat loss the door itself absorbs heat and cold The cure is another door solid core wood door is strong and does not have the same properties as steel doors Hope that helps Lr
Q:Several reading methods of steel tape measure
Direct reading method when measuring the steel tape zero scale alignment measurement starting point, proper tension (stretching force with steel tape tension or tension on the calibration ruler identification shall prevail, with the spring balance measure), direct reading measurement end point corresponding to the scale scale.
Q:Where can you get a thick sheet of steel?
Try the business-to-business yellow pages in your area. A local hardware store can also tell you who to contact. Or search steel plate or sheet metal on the internet to find a local supplier. No, sheet steel is not bullet proof, unless you get heavy plate. Depending on how thick it is, the plate will deform if hit by a high velocity bullet, but usually not enough to matter. Bullets have velocities from about 500 ft/sec up to roughly 3000 ft/sec, depending on the type of weapon used. I wouldn't try to use anything thinner than 3/4 inch. You'll have to experiment and see what it will actually stop. I can't guarantee it'll stop a high-velocity rifle slug. Try it and see.
Q:What is the difference between steel toe boots and composite toe?
steel toe boots are just that a piece of steel fitted over the toes, composite toe boots use other materials that are just as hard BUT they do not have the connectivity levels as steel. if you are working in a cold climate steel toes will freeze them toes right off, also electrical environments. my advice get a good pair of composite ones, and you get what you pay for, its worth the investment. more than you could ever imagine. proper foot support. helps legs cramps, back pain etc...
Q:Thermal expansion of steel?
? got me is that the whole problem or is there more?
Q:what do you use (wet stone or steel) to sharpen a carbon knife blade?
There are many ways to sharpen knives. I guess your question is whether to use the steel that comes with knives, or a stone. Steels are only to straighten the edge, which is stropping. They won't sharpen a truly dull knife. For that you need a real sharpening system, of which a whet stone is one. The edge of a knife will get wavy with use - that's what the steel is for, to true it back up.
Q:Can your sweat tarnish real silver & steel jewelry?
steel shouldn't really tarnish, it rusts and moisture increases that. Silver tarnishes when exposed to air and sulfur. Moisture increases the process a bit, but it happens anyway. Sweat is not gross, it's a necessary function of your body, otherwise you would die. A lot of sports people wear jewelry and they sweat a lot. If you wear the jewelry all the time, that will prevent the tarnish a bit. If you take it off, clean it (water and dish washing liquid), dry it and put it in a zip lock back to keep it away from air and moisture. In the end, cleaning the jewelry is quick and easy so don't worry about it.
Q:keeping a stainless steel stove clean and shiney?
I have a combo of black and stainless in my kitchen; not sure which one is worse some days. For normal everyday stuff, hot, soapy (Dawn), clean dishwater and a microfiber cloth work great. For quick touch ups, a 50/50 mixture of window cleaner and rubbing alcohol also works great. The window cleaner gets the grease and the alcohol helps with streaks and makes the cleaner germ killing. Use with a microfiber cloth. For really nasty burned on stuff, I'd use a sponge with a non-stick cookware safe nylon scrub pad on it and some of the hot, soapy water. Just lay the damp sponge on the spot, let it soak a bit and see if it comes off. If not, try a little Barkeeper's Friend. Dampen, sprinkle, smear it around a little and let it soak for about 10 minutes. Then scrub with the sponge. Wipe up the residue with the microfiber cloth. The microfiber cloths are really key; they wipe more efficiently than any sponge, wipe, paper towel, dish rag. Get several and change them out frequently. You just wash and dry them; no fabric softener and you're ready to use them again. And it wouldn't hurt to keep a protective coat of a good stainless steel product on there either. That helps keep the stuff from getting such a good hold. But I've found that most of those are pretty bad at cleaning; so clean it first, then polish.
Q:how can one go about melting and casting steel?
Sand casting useing silica sand was the classical method. Wood models called patterns made the cavity into which the metal was poured. Furnaces capable of melting iron and steel are not found everywhere. They are industrial machinery, not to be improvised. Some-one had better be very careful if he does get access to molten steel. There are some aspects of the process that are not intuitively obvious that can 'bite you' badly. Get at least some briefing from an experienced foundryman.
