The original USB spec is 5 volts DC at 1 amp draw, and many devices are limited to that spec as the lowest common denominator. Some newer devices can use the USB 2 spec when charging, which is 5 volts with a maximum of 2 amp draw. Basically it will allow a device that supports it to charge twice as fast as the USB 1 port.

The eelco+coil will take the punishment from any peeks and EMC problems from the car. Don't forget to start the car every once in a while if it takes longer than the hour! wouldn't want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere.
