- I have been involved in a few renovation,and constructions of bathrooms,,and always have been advised and adhered to the theory of placing the vanity on the opposite wall from the shower or bath enclosure..Reason being that not only does a moisture problem Always exist near the shower-bath area,,the migration of the moist heat infiltrates the vanity content if placed on the same wall.. Where that's not possible and you must set it up that way.. You can get vanities that are resin based cabinets,,which ARE expensive,,but are permanent and aren't effected by moisture..But YOU are definitely correct in at least having inches between the vanity and the shower glass..The more you can do the better.. - If you just want a vanity, glue, or nail the drawers shut, remove the insides, cut a hole for the pipes, and for the sink. From there it's the same as any counter top. If you want the drawers to work it's not a DIY, unless you have plenty of carpentry skills. Whatever, finish with 2-3 coats of water-based-poly to seal. Oh, great idea! They're really classy!

- Particle board doesn't lend itself to repair very well. It is rather fragile. Since the dog chewed it, I assume this is very near the bottom front of the vanity. With this in mind, I would say any repair that doesn't completely replace the portion damaged will in time be damaged again. The OKorderr portions of vanities and the corners are subject to being hit by your feet, mops, brooms and maybe the vacuum cleaner. This will leave your short cut repair open to being abused and finally failing.
