- Q: I am doing a research project at school on erosion, and one of the members on my research team said something about underground tiles that run water into the nearest body of water. We have been trying to locate a source, or ANY piece of information on this subject, but have failed. Is there anyone who can help us?
- These aren't erosion tiles, they are drainage tiles. Do a web search on tile drainage and you'll find out all you need to know about the subject. BTW, tiles and tile lines are just underground pipes with holes in them, used to lower shallow water tables. It wasn't clear to me that you understood this, so sorry if I'm pointing out the obvious.
- Q: Which of the major markets in Hangzhou to sell tiles?
- Hangzhou I know two places, hoping to help the landlord. One in Wenzhou village that area has a tile market, quite big.
- Q: I need to re-set some tiles on a roof that have slipped and replace some others. Also, I need to re seal my flashing around my vents. What am I getting into, and how hard is it to work on tile roof?
- the tricky part to working on a tile roof is staying on it. and not cracking any additional tiles. usually when i repair a tile roof i set up scaffolding there are a bunch of reasonss . the tiles sre heavy and hard to handle on just a ladder, the scaffolding offers a nice work area, and most important its alot safer, you can go to any rental store and rent scaffolding, when resealing around flashing and vents use a rubber butyl caulk for longer durability
- Q: i wanted to make a moseque out of ordiniary household tiles i have left over from small jobs around the house. can this be done and is it safe?
- Better to use an out side rated tile such as a frost proof tile. But if you live in a warmer climate ( non freezing) you can. In a path way the tiles do need to be rated for foot traffic. This so you don t get sued in a slip and fall.. Rain will not harm tiles at all .. Well maybe acid rain after years and years of exposure.Rain would only effect the bonding material if you use any thing other than a thin set. - Q: Am I able to Lay down Ceramic/Porcelain Tiles directly on top of vinyl tiles. If So are there special material that I need to use.Even though the floor is in the basement, it seems that the vinyl is laid over wood, rather than concerete. Thanks for your answer.
- Now why would you want to cover up a natural wood floor? You can lay the tiles on top of it. you would have to strip the floor first of any wax build up. use an adhesive made for tiles then grout in the gaps. Doors will need to be shaved on the bottom so you will have a quarter inch clearance. Any Lowe's, 84, or home Depot will have helpful instructions along with the materials needed.
- Q: Hello Everyone, I have been given option by my builder for option amongst vitrified, Indian and Italian tiles? Should it be separate for living/bed/room and kitchen. Only serious replies please. Thanks
- I ve worked with tiles for over 20 years and I find no difference in tiles from different areas such a Italian , Indian .USA, Brazil, China etc. They all have excellent and garbage tiles. The vitrified tiles is a type of tile as is ceramic and porcelains. Usually a bit harder bodied and the the sizing is better on vitrified tiles. Get what coloring and style fits your needs. You have any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
- Q: i am getting my kitchen done over in 2 weeks cost is not a factor i cant decide to do tiles or harwood flooring which is better for the kitchen. i have two kids 2 and 5
- I prefer ceramic tile in a kitchen simply because every hardwood floor I've ever had was slippery if liquid was spilled on it. There are issues with keeping the grout clean as someone pointed out, but good maintainence will take care of that. Another factor you'll want to consider is the look of everything else. If you are going with wood cabinets, hardwood floors might be too much. Or if you have a tile countertop and backsplash, tile flooring might be too much. Look at both and compare them to the other elements you have choosen for the kitchen, that will probably make the decision very easy. But either, ceramic tile or natural hardwood, both add a lot of value to your home and look beautiful.
- Q: I would like to install laminated flooring in my kitchen. Two of the wall are tiled. Is it possible to undercut these tiles or is there an easier method to do a neat installation?
- Yes, it is possible. You could use an oscillation type cutter with a carbide tip. If you do use this, use a scrap piece of the flooring as a shim to get your gap at the bottom so you can get the flooring under the tiles. then cover the gap with your trim.
- Q: i want to tile my house, i also want to pay less than a dollar per square foot for the materials. on top of that i want 16 tile... i know these deal exhist but i dont know where to look... please help
- With all due respect; CHEAP is such a relative word. After installing multiple thousands of sq. ft. of tile, I've often been called to remediate what others have done on the cheap. SHOP everywhere. Certainly there are discount flooring places all over the globe. Beyond cheap, your greater issue might be having the quantity you need for Whole house, and a FEW extra boxes for the OOOPS factor that Murphys law so clearly states. No offense; but in KNOWING deals exist why not just shop the WWW or yellow pages; HD or Lowes for discontinued closeouts; etc. If you find any for less than $1 per sq. ft. let me know; I'll buy the entire warehouse full. Without knowing at all the size of the area you want to tile, or if you've considered Hardness grades; or if you intend to set the tile yourself; I suggest some local research. BTW... the rationale behind buying 10% or more extra; is that Tile is not produced as a common item forever, nor stocked as such. Certainly you might get lucky and find a company that bailed out of a selection of 10,000 sq. ft. or more and now the vendor has to discount it. Steven Wolf
- Q: does anyone know what the most affordable nice tile flooring is? i was watching a tv show that was using slate for less than a dollar a sq ft. i cant seem to find that anywhere.. but im re-doing my kitchen and would love suggestions! no laminate or wood im really aiming for tile. thanks!
- Check Home Depot or your local tile supply store for discontinued patterns, they will be cheaper. Also a salvage building materials place. The thing is, you won't be able to buy a whole lot of it. So measure and know exactly how much you will need. Figure 15 to 20% extra for waste and cuts. If you can, always buy an extra box of a discontinued pattern, because that's your last chance to ever get more for patches or replacement tile.
