- Q: I'm currently in an Estimating and Bidding class. I have to estimate two divisions for a multi-million dollar project. The project that I chose is around 6 million dollars and involves constructing a new gas/lighting building. I chose to estimate steel, and my question is, around how much out of the 6 million goes toward just the steel estimate? If it helps, this building is has two floors and is roughly about 100x70 feet. The building not wood construction, but rather steel and brick. How much of that 6 million would go into the steel? I'm not looking for anything exact, just roughly.
- That is a little tough to answer given the details. I will try to answer it as best I can. You can send me a message if you need further help and I can get some more details from you. If it is a 6 million dollar project, that is about $428/sf - (6 million divided by 14,000 sf). $428 is a little bit higher end then say, just a Walmart which is a block and steel box. Assuming you have a concrete slab on the first floor, metal deck on the second floor, with steel beams and open web joists framing, steel columns and steel roof framing with a metal deck roof.... you could be approx 10-15% of the total 6 million. Now, this would include the structural steel, not light gauge steel framing for walls. It sounds like you are looking for structural steel, not metal stud framing. Hopefully this helps, I can check back to this thread later to see if you've had to add any more details.

- You could but you will have to run lower pressures and speed and thus lower power output. You should do some research the Me 262 the Nazi's built. I don;t know but I think they used steel. That's why the engine had to be serviced every few hours of flight.

- Stainless Steel has more advantages than disadvantages. But u asked for disadvantages so they r as follows i've given common disadvantages more can be found on Google. Disadvantages of Stainless Steel: Stainless steel tends to scratch and dent. Food, grease and fingerprints show very clearly on stainless steel, making frequent wiping and cleaning a necessity. High initial cost Difficult to fabricate, or in other words, it is not as malleable as other metals, say iron, and hence if not fabricated properly, results in costly re-work. Difficult to weld High cost of polishing etc. i.e. adding finishing touches for the market. there are advantages more than disadvantages. But u asked for disadvantages that's why i have given only disadvantages of stainless steel Hope what u want u got.

- The nickel and chromium content do have some effect on shine. But mostly they effect the corrosive and rust resistance property's of the stainless steel. 300 series stainless steel such as 304e or 316e will not rust like 400 series 416e eventually will. All types of stainless steel can achieve a bright shine. The key is using jewelers rouge and the correct buffing wheel. Avoid scotchbrite if you want shine. - Q: nylon sounds alot better but i want to keep the acoustic i have now. Is it proper to put nylon on an acoustic guitar meant for steel strings?
- As others have said, it is not recommended because the steel-string neck is meant to handle the tension of steel strings, and nylon strings have much less tension. It won't do any immediate damage, especially if you loosen your truss rod a full turn or two to compensate. But if you keep the nylon strings on for too long your neck may twist or warp irreversibly. I don't recommend doing it, but if you want to try it anyway, get nylon strings with ball ends (Martin makes Darco strings with ball ends, and there are also Black Diamond strings with ball ends). Putting nylon strings on a steel-string guitar is not nearly as bad as putting steel strings on a nylon-string guitar -- whatever you do, don't do that!
