If the head and foot boards are of different heights you'll need to cut them to uniform height. Safe is relative to how solid the beds are, so use good judgment before proceeding. BTW...I did it when my kids were younger and it worked perfectly. I worked roughly 10 years repairing furniture so that should count for something I hope.

If you're looking for a cheap bed - the frame - you can go to Ikea, they have a variety of styles at cost effective prices. However, you will need someone to lug it home for you (probably cheaper finding someone to do this than delivery). Ikea also has cheap bedding (mattresses) that are good, as well. (But the same goes for getting it home). There are other stores like Sleepy's, Sears, Levitz, and Macy's (big name stores that sell name brand mattresses), but they have a big mark-up on the products as well and they charge over $100 for delivery. Then there are places that are furniture warehouses - they have cheap beds and bedding and charge for delivery too. You can look through newspapers like the Daily News and/or the New York Post - they often have sales on furniture with delivery specials. A big thing to remember when buying any bed is that the bed is NEW and/or all materials used to make the bed are NEW. (This should alleviate the problems of bed bugs at the point of purchase.) You just have to look hard sometimes for the best deal. Ikea would be my best advice if you're looking for something really inexpensive. Just ask someone you know if they can drive it home for you. - a platform bed has wood slats or plywood as the base....a regular bed you can get with a foundation which is made of wood and will not give or wear out...a box spring will wear out and your mattress springs will start to give with the box spring...kind of like rolling into the middle..anyways a platform is also lower but i like mine with a foundation.....foundation--- platform---6 of one half dozen of the other nfused now box springs suck....

- Off white (shabby-chick) furniture and change all the knobs to big english drop pulls in an oil rubbed bronze or matte black.Pick up the design of the metal work on the bed somewhere like some black and white/cream toile wallpaper on one wall or lamp shades or draperies etc. in a black toile, not too much though or it will look overdone. I would get bedding similar too what is shown on the bed, it's perfect.Would also do walls in an off-white, this keeps things subtle/dreamy/romantic and will make the bedpop if your into that look. I am! Love the bed!
