Q:Installing beadboard over ceramic tile?
I'm just a DIYer but I've laid some tile and installed beadboard (both the panels and the planks). I am getting ready to do exactly what you ask about...covering tile with beadboard. In my situation I have a single row of tiles along the floor and then they run up and around the tub into the large field. That field is staying, for now. My issue is if I leave the tiles, which I am leanng towards, how do I frame out arund them. The tiles along the floor aren't a big deal, I'll just fir out from the top but along the vertical row I need to figure out a good looking transition and trim....but there's no reason you can's cover the tile if the surface is sound, and the area is dry. You are probably using the panels because you need to glue directly to the tile...and there may be some buckling, not because its a bathroom but just because this material can buckle. The panels are a better choice, imo, because the are thicker and have some adjustment to them. They aren't hard to cut or install and I think they just look better. You probably don't need to seal the individual boards, but as others have noted, a coat of something, anything really, on the backside of the panels won't hurt. Balance that, however, against the loss of adhesion for your glue.
Q:Ceramic tile flooring?
Instead of re-painting your tiles why not change the colour scheme by laying a new pattern? A tip for removing old tiles is to break them with a hammer in the centre and then remove the broken pieces from the centre out to the joins, this way you wont damage any tiles adjacent to them! You can try different patterns without gluing them down, until you find the best pattern that suits you. Good luck and have a great day!
Q:Replacing a ceramic tile floor?
Best to rip it out and start new. And start with a new sub floor made for and the proper thickness for tile.. NEVER, EVER use a thin 1/4 luan or ply wood.. This is totally inadequate for tile and goes against all tile hand book guides such as the ATC and TCA guide book.Minimum substrate thickness for tile is 1 1/4 not the 1 as suggested. Thus you must use 1/2 board or backer board ( properly installed) to meet minimum standards for stability for tile. There are other methods to install but this is very common way. Going over the old with new tile is a possible option but tile setter need to know what their doing. Thus raising floor only thickness of the tile and thin set. I d never go over it raising it that much. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q:help with ugly tiles?
I would make sure with your landlord about painting the tile first, He/she may have meant that he didn't mind you changing the tiles, but doesn't want them painted. If you paint them and it start peeling off, you've then left your landlord with a headache to deal with after you move out. This can lead to small claims court.
Q:Easy math question How to find the area for tiling?
I believe the answer for the first question is 192. You are ASSUMING that you need not to count the cut ones. The first part of the problem saids You are tiling a room therefore you need to supply with whole tiles, a store will not sell cut and you cannot cut what you have not purchased. For any engineer, architect, builder the order of process is total needed, and then how many need to be cut and then you place your order so you need to know the number of packages. If answered your way that is when you see people going back to the store to buy more because they did not think orderly.
Q:How to cover where grout, laminate wood & tile flooring meet.?
we had a similar situation where 2 different laminates meet between a bathroom and kitchen... we covered it with a screwed in brass plate... holds the flooring down and looks nice too
Q:Apply vinyl over ceramic tile?
Not a good idea, the vinyl will conform to the shape of the floor underneath and the indents of the grout lines will show through. If they are the small 1 inch by 1 inch tiles you can buy a product called floor leveler and put it over the tiles to create a smooth surface. It is a powder that mixes with water to create a plaster type mix. Ok for a small ie bathroom floor, huge job on a kitchen floor. The key to success is always in the prep. Make sure the underneath floor is very smooth before trying to put down vinyl. Another method would be to glue shower/tile backer board over the tile. This comes in quarter inch thickness and can be glued down using thin-set mortar, but with the new vinyl you will be raising the floor level by almost a half inch. This may mean that you have to trim doors from the bottom. It is not an impossible task and will be worth it if you really hate the tile. Keep in mind that if you use this method in a bathroom that the toilet will have to be removed and an adapter placed on the flange to make up for the height difference. If you own the house, I would remove the tile, if you rent, I would reconsider and probably use scatter rugs. If you are still going to do it, make a paper pattern or buy a pattern kit at the big box store. Vinyl does not necessarily need to be glued down, but gluing the edges will generally keep them from curling up. Good luck, there is a great deal of self satifaction in improving the look of a room and making it you.
Q:Electrician or tiling trade?
Tiling is very hard on your knees and back. I would go for the electrician job. In America heat and air conditioning pays the best by far. Good luck! Let us know what you decide.
Q:when cutting tile for the corner of the shower stall should I leave a gap on each side of the tile?
Tile one wall all the way to the corner, leaving a small gap at the wall to compensate for any wall movement. Then tile the other wall. leaving the same size gap as your grout lines between the two. You do not want to have a void in the corner.
