- Q:Do you have to rough up the old flooring ?
- I tile, every day of my life, and while I'm not at all a fan of vinyl tile, you didn't state PEEL and STICK. Obviously the adhesives on Peel and Stick are inferior and as answer 1 suggests the tile can creep on any substrate. You also don't state any texture on the current tile, certainly to float anything over it is no less a task and challenge as it would be to remove the tile. For one thing a peel and stick needs almost a glass like finish for its inferior adhesive to be even modestly effective. That would relate to roughing up as well. Then there is the issue of how you might define Rough Up? I offer my opinion/ s First of all if it's peel and stick, I'd not bother, but if I bothered, my usual; course of action is a water based contact cement on both the substrate and the bottom side of the tile. That method can be used on non adhesive backed tile as well, but there are many viable/valid tile mastics on the market. A final note, no matter what tile or method you choose. DO NOT use the existing tiles as a guide to install new. If you choose to floor over though I cannot imagine doing so, you will be better served to displace seaming the new tile, (offset) at the seams, from the existing. Steven Wolf Just my two sense
- Q:Okay, I‘m doing a tub surround with porcelain tile. Got the last cut around the fixtures that requires a hole to be cut in the center of the tile. Long story short, I‘ve busted 22 tiles trying. I‘ve tried every single drill bit I‘ve got. Everything from metal hole punchers to concrete bits. Nothing even scratches this porcelain tile. Any tips on how to punch a hole in this tile? I‘m desperate!
- Diamond hole saws are available to cut holes in tile. Also tungsten saw blades which go into a hacksaw frame are available.
- Q:The interior of my shower is all glazed ceramic tile. I have always used Tilex for cleaning with no problem. Recently I used a Lysol Bathroom cleaner and now I haved horrible white streaks down the walls where I sprayed it. How can I get rid of the streaks? Is it the product that made them? - Sorry buddy.. The chemicals have eaten away at your tile, thus the white streaks. You will have to pay a proffesional to repair that. :(
- Q:i had a pipe leak into my bedroom and now everything is torn apart so i am remodeling my room and i cant decide between wood or tile flooring. my dad said wood because it looks good and because our living room and theater room is tile and if my bedroom is tile it wouldnt make any sense. my mom says i should get tile because if my grandma spills her drink or eat in my room it wont ruin the tile and its easy to clean up but if wood it could be ruined with scratch marks or circle stain on the wood from the cup or drink she spills. so now i dont know which one to choose. also i would like to paint my room blue and wonder if you guys have any suggestions on the shade colors of blue any website or image of the shade color would be nice if i could view them. thank you in advance!
- I suggest going with the wood flooring. Tile really does not make sense in a bedroom both aesthetically and in practicality. Tile is cold so your feet will always touch down on cold tile when you get out of bed. Plus it is very hard, so if grandma drops anything breakable on tile it is almost certain to break. The grout between the tiles is difficult to clean and stains easily. Hardwood or the newer 'hardwood' laminate flooring are both superior options for a bedroom. If you're worried about grandma's oopses, buy an inexpensive throw rug for the area she is likely to sit at and spot clean it when she has a spill. Wood flooring will not show a ring from laying down a cup. A light shade of slate blue (grey-blue) will look nice with wood flooring. I would go with a white trim with the slightest hint of the same blue on your walls mixed into it. Then make or buy curtains with a much darker shade of the same color blue. Paint chips will help you find color families that look nice together and darker shades of the same color. Just remember that most colors on paint chips will appear darker when your entire room is painted that color. What I do is find the color I love most on a paint chip, and then I go with the next lighter shade of that color, and it winds up appearing to be the color that I wanted. Good luck. - It is not good because the linoleum is a soft surface and this would cause the tiles to crack. It is better to remove the linoleum. Even if you have to lay the tile over glue residue or some paper backing that remains after trying to remove the linoleum this is better than laying the tile over the soft linoleum.
- Q:I am planning on laying some tile today but not sure when it can be walked on. Also, can I lay some today and start again tomorrow? It is in a small bathroom.
- You need to wait at least 14-16hrs before walking on your tile job. Walking on it sooner will weaken the mortar's bond by stressing the mortar before it is cured enough to withstand the weight. Essentially, you will be shortening the lifespan of your hard work. Of course you can stop anywhere in the midst of the tile job, just make sure to scrape up any mortar in the untiled section. Often times I will do it this way: Before you start sticking the tile, create crossing base lines (at the room center) with chalk or pencil to start the layout. Place all of the full tiles (using spacers) and then measure and make all of the perimeter cuts, etc. Layout all of the tiles as if you were sticking them permanantly. Number the tiles with a wax pen(crayon) and pick them back up by rows. Then you will be able to mix mortar and lay all of the tile at once and rather quickly. Wait 24hrs, carefully scrape the grout joints and vacuum thuroughly. Grout the tile as you normally would then keep traffic off the floor for another 16-24hrs. Carefully place your commode, vanity, etc. After 72hrs of grouting, be sure to seal the grout preferably with a sealer with a teflon additive. Seal the grout until no water will absorb into the grout! As long as the grout is properly sealed, it will stay looking like new for years. Do the water absorbtion test every year to see if resealing is necessary. Good luck and I hope this helps.

- Its called wire mesh. Its not used as much anymore. What makes tiles or grout crack is the wood below the tiles. If the floor joists are too far apart and the plywood is not thick enough it can cause the floor to move. Even a little bit of movement can cause the tiles and the grout to crack. The wire mesh will not help if the floor moves.
- Q:in my bathroom what do i need thats easy an inexpensive? Can i do it myself.? trying to do it for my mother this weekend while she is away. Have tile thats old and seperating can i just pull it up clean the floor and lay the tile?
- If it's a bathroom floor and you want something not too expensive, i would go for some 12 x 12 ceramic tile. Just make sure it's not too smooth or shiny. It is a bathroom you wouldn't want your mother to slip. So go for some tile with a textured surface. Another important thing to consider is what kind of surface your'e laying the tile onto. If it's concrete there might not be any problems. If it's a wood surface, you better get some backer board such as hardibacker or wonderboard. Trust me. You do not want to lay tile straight to tha wood. I always ens uplifting and you get a big mess. ~Good luck!~
