The main level is mainly hardwood floor, and I plan to have a home theater in the basement. I'd like to cut down on the noise from the hardwood floor above (walking in shoes is very loud!) and noise from the theater from coming upstairs. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this? I was thinking spray foam would be perfect, but man is that stuff expensive. Any other best bet suggestions?Thanks!

- Cut old tape and mud out. You can use either sticky mesh tape, or paper tape. Mesh tape goes down before mud, paper after skim coat of mud. Soak paper tape in water before use to prevent pealing. Try to make mud as smooth as possible, to reduce sanding. 3 coats, sanding between coats, or until smooth.
- Q:We have removed our rough sawn cedar from our cathedral ceiling in our 80's home. We found fiberglass insulation and 2x6 joists (the roof is directly above). The first electrician came out before we removed the ceiling and assumed there was no insulation and said we needed to get spray insulation because of the condensation can lights can cause. - Q:I'm looking to move into a new apartment by the end of the month. It's in a good location, however the only down side is that the neighbors upstairs have kids and they run a day care during the day. Luckily I work and won't be home until 5:30 or so, but just by visiting the place today I could hear them walking upstairs and I'm sure that it's going to annoy me.I would like to know if anybody has any ideas on how to noise proof my ceiling for a reasonable price. Is there some kind of paint that effectively noise proofs walls and such, or would I have to wreck the ceiling and place fiberglass or something of the sort in order to ensure that I don't hear them walking or they don't hear me playing loud music and such.Any help is appreciated, thanks!
- This will cost you a little bit and I suppose you'd have to get permission from the landlord, but you can buy ceiling covering that comes in larger pieces but has a design in relief so that it will look like many smaller tiles. You use a caulk gun to put adhesive on the back of the section in strategic places, and then you just press it up onto your ceiling...just start at one corner and go all the way to the opposite one and then go back and start another row...remember to 'match' the pieces so that the tile lines are even. This is very light weight material but it is has a sort of foam-like core that will indeed give you some sound proofing. Plus, it makes a very regal looking ceiling.

I have told him that it may contain asbestos but he thinks he can do it on his own. So we are going to get it tested and if it does he just wants to remove it himself. - He wants to what?? Id get his head read, this stuff is extremely dangerous material. It may take 20 yrs to develop cancer, But its a bit late then to say Gee I wish I had done it properley If it is asbestos Its better to pay the experts to do a proper job, maybe expensive but I think is prefferable to an early funeral, maybe yours!!!!!
- Q:We just remodeled and now have a family room in our basement. This is right under our upstairs living room. All noise in the basement comes directly upstairs. There is duct work running across the basement ceiling to the floor vents in the living room. We have nothing on the basement ceiling right now. Any suggestions of how to reduce the sound coming up? - Well, if you are willing to re-drywall anyway, why not tear down your existing ceiling and insulate it with fiberglass batts or blown cellulose? Then, you won't have two ceilings. When I moved into my house, I always hated how people just layered things like floors and just put the new over the old. Plus, I don't know how much ceiling space you have, but you would lose about 4 inches from redrywalling a second ceiling.
- Q:I live in the basement and the tiles in my drop ceiling are so annoying there the normal whatever material they are and i have dark carpeting and i guess our house sucks because I have to vacuum all the time because ill look down and there will be white specks all over the floor which im guessing is coming from the tiles from when people walk upstairs. So i want to replace them with a material that wont do that.
- Sounds like the tiles are crumbling and need to be stablised. Take out the tiles and give them a coat of a water based glue such as PVA diluted 3 parts water 1 part PVA. Let it dry well and paint with a water based paint to a colour of you choice.The tiles are probably getting damp, this usually causes problems with them but this will fix it for a while.
