by power cable im assuming you made sure to purchase the correct model, and that you mean the cable, along with the transformer connected to it? (ac plug transformer cord laptop) if everything's plugged in, your charge icon on your laptop should let you know with some sort of animated plugged in/charging icon. if the charger is known to be good, then unfortunately you may have a loose/bad dc receptacle in your laptop. the port where you plug in the cable sometimes comes loose from wear and tear and the connection fails. try gently jiggling it around to see if it comes on when its plugged in. if it is bad, you can take it to a computer tech shop and they can fix it. just a thought.

No. Not a 3.5 hard drive. You can do it with a 2.5 laptop drive because the drive mechanics and electronics require less power. A 3.5 drive requires too much power for USB to provide. Though... In the near future, you will see USB ports that are capable of supplying more power than the standard .5 amps that USB currently provides. So after they come out, you might see it being a possibility then.

Q:So I'm currently living in a dorm room, and my tv is hooked up to the campus cable system. A couple of minutes ago, the power went off and turned back on right away, and I was watching tv during this. Now the power is working but the cable is not, all the channels are nothing but static.I've tried resetting my tv, but I'm wondering what else I could do. If the PSU is 800 watts or less, it likely doesn't matter. Look at the power cable and make sure it doesn't look particularly thin or flimsy. Most power cables are rated for 6A or more, which should be good for over 700 watts. Even most computers with 800 watt power supplies or more don't actually draw over 600 watts. I have seen power cables intended for laptops or monitors that were only rated for 2A. That's only good to 250watts, and a large desktop could easily draw more than that.
