 Double hung windows

have always been common in older homes, but recently, they have become a popular choice as replacement windows and for new residential projects. The greatest advantage of the double hung window design is that they fit into any decorating scheme from historic to traditional to contemporary. Older homes often require custom window builds and installations and it’s important to have precise measurements to eliminate air and moisture leaks.

Another advantage is that because they slide up and down, up instead of opening out, double-hung windows don't take up exterior space when open, making them ideal for high traffic areas like adjoining walkways, porches and patios. Therefore, the design itself is the main benefit from a space-saving standpoint.

Tilt-out upper and lower sashes are the best features of today’s double hung windows. Some models offer tilting upper sections only. This feature makes cleaning and inspecting weatherproofing strips and repairing caulking very simple and convenient. Some models are offered with completely removable sashes, which offer obvious advantages

FAQ

Q: My son sprayed 50 SPF sunscreen on the front of our washer and dryer I have tried everything and nothing seems to take it off. It just leaves a haze on the clear plastic. Any suggestions?
hi ..i would try hand cleaner like mechanics use. just rub it on and leave it for a half hour, then wash off with soap and water. i use this for all kinds of stains. u can buy it at canadian tire or walmart. good luck.
Q: its like recycling plastic into paper use
if we can make sex dolls from plastic I reckon making paper from plastic shouldn't be a problem.
Q: I own a 323i bmw convertible. I just replaced the top but the back plastic window is already starting to cloud. I was recommended a wax called ziond or something along those lines. It worked the first time but is now turning the window yellow. I dont wish to replace the window so i was wondering if anyone knew an easier option? such as some home remedy to grease it off. idk ive tried everything!thanks!
it's not too hard. It's the same thing that happens to headlights, condensation gets in and discolors the plastic. Go to your local Advance or NAPA or even sears, just pick up a thing of headlight restorer. All you have to do is rub it on and rub it off five minutes later. It's pretty cheap too, like 12 bucks max. hope this helped
Q: i am doing this investigatory project about different kinds of windows and im testing the difference between glass and plastic windows and i found that plastic windows make the room hotter than glass windows. Why is this so? what is in both these materials that causes this result? what are they made of and what contributes to this result? please help me. i need this by tomorrow!!!:(
It has to do with how well the material conducts energy. Plastic is probably a better insulator which means it does not transfer energy well. Glass is also an insulator but maybe it isn't as good of an insulator. Try doing more research on the conductive/heat transfer properties of glass vs. plastic.
Q: There is a tear in my drivers side window at the bottom where the plastic is covered by the fabric, but the fabric is coming lose and the tear is starting to show and open itself to elements. Also, this window zipper only closes and opens one way, going the other way the teeth will not connect, any ideas? Also, there is a larger 4-5 inch tear in my rear plastic window right under where the zipper releases the plastic from the fabric. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
There are some kits available for making repairs for clear plastic, you probably will not find them at an auto supply, but, at a place where supplies are sold for any inflatable items, air mattress, floats, etc. These clear repair kits come with an adheres and once in place it is there to stay. On the large tare on your back rear windshield, you may want to place a repair sheet on both sides. Also you may consider sewing it with clear fishing line. As far as you zipper is concern, you can replace the zipper pull, this may or may not solve your problem. Hope that some of the above is of some help!
Q: Is there a way you can tint flexible plastic windows in a convertible car?
cover them with a removable film
Q: this geo metro is a 92 4door hatchback and window is in the hatch and I am looking for new window molding to go around this window. If anyone know just put me in the right direction.
It's a 92 Metro. Use duct tape. no Check with auto glass places. They will be expensive but it may be the only place to find it. Or try J.C. Whitney.
Q: I am talking about the stuff you tape to the inside of your home windows and use a hair dryer to stretch it tight. It is supposed to keep single pane windows better at keeping in the heat. I live where it gets 30 degrees at night and 40-50 during the day in winter. Does anyone have experience with these products? Which type works best? Mainly, does it really keep heat in? OR does it keep sunlight heat out and balance out to zero help?
Yes it can make a HUGE difference. In college, I lived in an old drafty house with 6 other friends. Our heating bills were astronomical and you could literally feel the wind blowing through the windows! We shrink-wrapped the windows and immediately noticed a change in the temperature in the rooms. Our heating bills dropped by 30% over one month. Windows typically account for 10-20% of the heat loss in a house. Even if you have double-pane windows, they still get cold, leeching heat out of your room. The plastic sheeting will help by creating a partial vacuum between the window and the plastic which acts as an insulator (this is the same principle those old metal glass thermos bottles use.) This helps keep the heat in, and the cold out. Sunlight still passes through, but not the heat from the sun. That's mostly blocked by the vacuum between the plastic and the window. Double pane windows do most the same thing - only the space between the panes is filled with Argon gas, which is a poor conductor of heat and cold. The only downside is that the sticky tape these kits use may damage paint when removed - assuming you can remove the tape at all. You'll also need to purchase a new sheets for each window each year. Other alternatives include making sure there are no holes or cracks around your window frames. Use a caulk gun to fix these problems, just don't caulk the windows shut! :-) Caulk guns are cheap, and you don't need an expensive tube of caulk - even the $0.99 tubes of painter's caulk will do the job. (it also work wonders against keeping bugs out of your house, but that's for another time.) Covering the windows with heavy drapes will also help, but isn't as effective as the plastic sheeting. However, every little bit can help. Drapes also help in the summer by helping keep heat out of your house.
Q: I'm thinking of buying wool army blankets for every window. Is that the warmest and cheapest thing?Plastic may plug up drafts, but it has never kept the house warm.
Sounds like you are in an old house with single pane windows. Go to Home Depot and talk to them about weather stripping your windows and doors. Check all the outlets on outside walls too. They make an insert you can put under the cover plate to stop drafts. You might look into the plastic that you heat up and it forms a tight seal on the windows. Insulated drapes would help a lot as well. Good Luck!!
Q: So I drunkenly put my elbow through my friend's passenger window in his jeep wrangler..he's pissed and is demanding $200 for its replacement or he's pressing charges. Yeah, nice friend. 200 dollars sounds like an astronomical amount for a piece of plastic that zips onto your car. Am I getting ripped off?
You're not getting ripped off... those things are surprisingly expensive.
