It's funny you should ask because I was just researching the wind energy subject while looking at getting a job with a company that makes generators. Generally I've found that it isn't! Wind power is usually expected to be supplimental to the power grid because you can't depend on it 24/7. The only exceptions to this are remote areas where they have no power grid access and even then they usually have diesel generators too. I have seen small ones on sailing boats where I'm sure it just tops up their batteries. Waste byproducts are zero or even negative. I say negative because in a lot of places the excess power is fed back into the power grid reducing the need for the other power stations to pollute as much. In fact the only bad things I've heard are from those that think they are an eye sore, those that think they are noisy (which generally are not) and those that think birds will crash into them. it's funny that they don't complain about the glowing ones that nest at my local nuke generating plant tho ;o)

no expert on the rail industry but i dont believe any US company uses a strictly diesel freight train any more. they have all been diesel electric for awhile now. as far as carbon they should still be lower than a comparable amount of semi's

Q:From what I understand, when the earthquake struck, the nuclear reactors had shut down (control rods were inserted). As a result, the power coming from the steam turbine generators were shut off.At the same time, the earthquake had knocked out Japan's power grid, so power coming from outside the power plant was out.Then the emergency diesel generators went into effect, but was knocked out an hour later as well, and people suspect it was from the tsunami.Would the disaster still have happened if they kept the steam turbine generators running (which means never shutting down the reactor via control rods), and water pumping, instead of shutting it down and letting the backup power direct the emergency cooling?
Had they not shutdown the reactors there would have been enough power to run the cooling system without using the emergency diesel generators. But as you said the grid was knocked out. It took several days to get up a power line from an other power plant to Fukushima after the earthquake struck. Without a grid to get rid of the electrical energy the steam turbine generators overheat. There wasn't a choice to not shutdown the reactors once the electrical grid was down. Do you know that a simple Tornado has all it takes to start the same kind of desaster in the US? Tornado throws enough debris on the roads to ensure that no transport vehicles can reach the reactors for the next 12 hours. Tornado tears apart the emergency generators diesel tanks. Tornado tears down the grid near the power plant so that the reactors have to go into shutdown and that no electrical energy from other power plants is available. All we need is a simple tornado.

Q:I know in some cases Electric companies will buy energy from someone who's solar panel's/wind turbines are overproducing. I think the system's have to be properly grid tied, i.e. either installed by or inspected by someone from the power company. I know that they don't pay much, but if you had a diesel generator running on waste vegetable oil.like if you made an arrangement with a restaurant to pick up their waste oil for them, it would be nice to be able to do so on a regular basis instead of going to them every so often saying Hey, I ran out of oil, I need some more. I guess I'm specifically asking about AEP. (American Electric Power) I live in Findlay, Ohio. I was on their website but couldn't find the answer to this question. Thanks!

Q:Im currently working on a DC generator design . I have my output set to 3000 kw . Any idea what's the usually assumed voltage for this rating ?
I believe that DC generators in this size range have been used in diesel-electric locomotives. Today, locomotives are designed with AC drive systems, so there isn't much information about design for DC systems. I found a little bit of Information that indicates that generators of this size may have been designed to operate at about 1200 volts. Edit-1 The 1200 volt design may have been an AC generator with a rectifier connected to two 600 volt DC motors connected in series. The largest DC generators may have been 600 volt machines. Large DC generators were also used in Ward-Leonard drives in steel mill applications and other large industrial applications. It appears that these may have been 600 volt machines. In any case, applications for DC generators began to be converted to AC generators with silicone rectifiers as soon as high-power silicone rectifiers became available in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Today, working on a large DC generator design would seem to be pointless except as an academic exercise. Even the value of such an academic exercise seems questionable.
