There are lubricity additives to help the fuel flow. Also Cetane enhancers, similar to octane boosters in gasoline. Also detergents, again like gasoline, to keep injectors clean.

Q:I have heard that they are not and the necessary bacteria is there from the human waste dumped into the tank. There are numerous sites that say additives are necessary and of course those sites recommend you buy it from them. So is there ever a reason to use them and which ones if any are good and which ones are scams?Also I know someone who says they haven‘t had their tank pumped in 10 years and it still works fine, but every septic site says to pump your tank every 1-3 years. Will the bacteria in a well maintained tank naturally destroy the solids making pumping unnecessary?

You are correct. NO ADDITIVES at all. Just human waste. No grease etc. I have had this house for 34 years and have only had it pumped about 4 times. Now the new ordanace says I must get it pumped every 3 years. NO ADDITIVES.

Q:well when i start the car in the morning or if it sits for a while,it will smoke then clear up.so i put in a stop oil burning additive in the car.( stuff was for 4 cyl engines,which it is)and did not over fill engine.well the next day with less than 15 miles on engine with the additive in the car i went to a friends to change tires.so the car sat for about a half hour.when i started the car it really smoked bad and did for a few days when i started it up in the morning or let it sit for a while.it would clear up but it definitely is smoking worse.so i talked to a notable mechanic and explained the situation to him and he said the additive i put in was the cause and i should change my oil and filter,so i did.the name of the additive was RESTORE a name brand additive.whats your thoughts on this?of course since i just changed the oil and really have not driven the car to see if that will work.but tomorrow i should get some results.thanks for any help.

Additives really don't work all that well to fix oil control problems. Oil control problems and smoking are usually due to bad/ leaking valve seals, or worn piston rings. You don't mention the age of the vehicle or the mileage, so I would have your mechanic do a compression test to identify the problem.

I've look at many of these, and have yet to find one that actually works. Most actually increase your fuel consumption, no matter what they claim. A few will actually damage your engine. Always use what the engine was designed to use. Good luck!
