- Q:What kind of baseboard is used for paving plastic flooring?
- Are generally plastic baseboard or aluminum alloy, no special requirements
- Q:We are trying to repair the kitchen floor in our new house. When we pulled up the linoleum rug (which covered only half the floor), we discovered there was tile below. My husband busted up part of the tile to see if the floor under it matched the hardwood in the rest of the house (including the other half of the kitchen). Apparently the tiles were placed on top of a layer of plaster. There is a wooden floor/subfloor below the plaster but when the tiles and plaster are removed, it leaves the floor uneven with the hardwood by almost an inch. We were going to put down plywood to even the floor and put the new flooring (laminate tiles) on top of that but after checking prices, that's not really feasible for us on our budget. Does anyone have any cheaper solutions?
- if your down to the sub floor, you can put down 1/4 inch backer board on top of the sub floor. then the difference can be made up with the laminate. laminate floor comes in different thicknesses. when you say your husband busted up the tiles, do you mean ceramic tiles? ceramic tiles would be set in a layer of mortar. the laminate does not have to be exactly the same height as the existing wood floor. you can put a transition piece between the new laminate and the existing wood floor. you will put a transition piece between the old and new floor anyway. it's easier if the floors match, but they don't have to be exact. there's molding or thresh hold strips that go between the new and old floor. they come for floors that are even as well as uneven.

- Because a series of magnetic reversals that are semmetrical either side of EACH mid oceanic ridge have been mapped out and clearly demonstrate the way the the oceans have spread through time. In the late 1950s, a series of oceanographic expeditions was commissioned to map the magnetic character of the ocean floor, with the expectation that the ocean floors would display largely uniform magnetic properties. Surprisingly, results showed that the basaltic sea floor has a striped magnetic pattern, and that the stripes run essentially parallel to the mid-ocean ridges. Moreover, the stripes on one side of a mid-ocean ridge are symmetrically matched to others of similar width and polarity on the opposite side. In 1963, two British geoscientists, Vine and Matthews (Box 1), proposed a hypothesis that elegantly explained how these magnetic reversal stripes formed by linking them to the new idea of sea-floor spreading. They suggested that as new oceanic crust forms by the solidification of basalt magma, it acquires a magnetisation in the same orientation as the prevailing global magnetic field. As sea-floor spreading continues, new oceanic crust is generated along the ridge axis. If the polarity of the magnetic field then reverses, any newly erupted basalt becomes magnetised in the opposite direction to that of the earlier crust and so records the opposite polarity. Since sea-floor spreading is a continuous process on a geological timescale, the process preserves rocks of alternating polarity across the ocean floor (Figure 7a). Reading outwards in one direction from the mid-ocean ridge gives a record of reversals over time, and this can be matched with the record read in the opposite direction.

- You are going to put a 2x4(or6) on the floor as a bottom plate. Your studs will be nailed to the plate. Use construction glue to fasten the plate to the floor. It takes a bit longer to set up than the nails, but it works if the floor is clean and dry. If you are really worried about it, fasten some of the studs to the wall.

- Q:So I would like to coat my garage but my garage floor is not like most smooth cement floors it is a very bumpy floor. It also has a thin strip of wood running down the center of the floor. Is there anyway to coat this floor to get it smooth?
- most garage floor paints are 'self leveling'... whichb means 2 things. you need a lot of it and it takes al ong time to set (they are epoxy based)
- Q:We just bought a new house and have linoleum floor in the kitchen, dining room and by the front door. Although the floor is nice, due to the natural etchings in the linoleum dirt gets in there and it so hard to clean. I used a abrasive product but was told that will take off the coating on the floor. Any suggestions (other than buying a fancy cleaning machine) for cleaning products that would work well. We are probably talking about 600 sq feet of floor. By the way, I live in Canada.
- my kitchen floor is linoleum, but its small. i just spray windex and go across it with a cloth. you should try a swiffer with the built in spray. they're great. they work on hardwood floors, too. you just press a button and cleaning fluid comes out right in front of the mop-type part.
