Me Me. You need to understand the physics. The speed of light is fixed for a given medium. So, for your fused quartz, c = Cn, where C is the speed in a vacuum and n is the refraction index, which you need to look up. c = ? is the answer you are looking for. Note this has nothing... nothing... to do with L, the wavelength of the light. L = CT, where C is light speed and T is the period of the light wave. As f = 1/T is the frequency of any wave, we have Lf = C. So as you can see, whenever the wavelength is changed, the frequency must also change to keep the light speed at C, no matter what. We can write L = CT = (c/n)T; so that c = nL/T, but you still need n the refraction index and this is just a variation of c = nC anyway. The wavelength is really not germane.

Quartz is a common mineral in felsic igneous rocks and in hydrothermal (and other metamorphic) rocks. There should be a rock or mineral shop close to where you live that could sell you single rocks. There is a warning which I must issue: once you get into a rock and mineral shop you may find it hard to leave since there are so many beautiful and interesting specimens available.

the website says that it is possible to find gold still encased or attached to quartz, not that every piece of quartz will contain some gold. in reality, it is nearly the opposite: most quartz will NOT contain gold. it's too bad, but a least quartz is pretty on its own :)

Sandstone doesn't turn into quartz. Sandstone is made of indiviidual grains that usually include quartz, but also a lot of other minerals. When sandstone is weathered it breaks down into the mineral grains which are released to the environment and move away as sand. The quartz grains are more resistant to weathering and destructino than many of the other types of mineral grains, so as the sediment moves, it becomes more rich in quartz (because the other minerals are destroyed).
