Q:DIY mosaic tiling?
I have tiled over formica counters. This is easy. I got a good utility knife and scored the counter all over. Then I got Lock Tite power grab white glue (this is the glue that holds a brick to the ceiling in the commercial) I applied it to the counter with a putty knife in small sections and applied the tile. Mosaics are fun to do. Just smash the tiles with a hammer and sand the edges with a stone sanding block. If you are using different tiles they may be different thicknesses so use the thickest first and add more glue to raise the others to the same height. Now the edge of the table is going to be an issue if you want a finished edge...If the table is square you can have a pretty 1' molding cut and even glue that on. There are some ceramic tiles that are made for edges...so you can use those for the edges after you break them. You are going to have a blast doing this...it's like a puzzle and lots of fun. Enjoy!
Q:can you recycle tile?
There are ARTISTS who use CERAMIC tile scraps.
Q:Tile for a leopard gecko habitat?
I've heard slate tiles are good, especially for heat conduction. Many people use them on top of sand to reduce the risk of sand ingestion and impaction.
Q:Ceramic Tile Subfloor Thickness?
Subfloor Thickness
Q:Tub surround tile layout questions?
Run the full tile as the first course at the tub and the accent tile will be close enough to eye level to look good.
Q:Does repainting kitchen tiles really work?
Okay. I'm a tile setter, so I am biased, but you will get best results by replacing all the tile. Guy#1 is right, but you need to realize it is just paint (even if its epoxy paint, which is much tougher than standard household latex paint.) It can (will) scratch and (will) scuff. The shine of the new expoxy surface will go away. If you are a meticulous house cleaner and never slide your pots and pans and dishes on the tile counter surface, then you can probably get away with it. So yes, it will work, but may not be a perfect solution, depending on your housekeeping style. Mike PS. I gotta chime in on Guy # 3's comments. He is right in that you can replace the offensive tiles. However, its not so simple, unless you are a good craftsperson. You have to be very, very careful removing the tiles, because you can very easily chip the tiles next to the ones you are removing.as he says, removing the grout is most important. Also, be very gentle with your hammering and chipping away at the old tiles. Its when you try to force it or try to remove too much at a time you run into trouble.
Q:what preparation is needed to paint ceramic tiles?
John, I know of no one that has painted over ceramic tile and is satisfied with the results. It's a finish that will not hold up through the constant use of cleaning products. Retiling is honestly the anser. It can be done easily. You'll want to cut through the drywall along the edge of the existing tile aolong the entire perimeter. Remove all the drywall and tile (still adhered to the drywall) in sections. Place cardboard or something that will protect the tub while this process occurs. After that install 1/2' hardi-backer with 1 1/2 screws and install the tile. If you use the 4x4 glazed tile, you can rent a tile cutter for about $15 (or buy one for double that). The tile will cost about $1.40p/sf. Typically you'd need about 70sf of tile (or around $110.00), and 50 pcs of 2x6 cap (about $70) and 2pcs 2x2 corner cap ($4). Grout will run $15. The hardi backer will be $50. Mastic to set tiles will be around $30. An alternative is lay tile over the existing. You will have to remove the existing soap dish to do this.. You save the cost of hardibacker, and some labor. If you do endeavor into this, set the soap dish with the grout, not the mastic. it's a common mistake by DYIers. Use some tape to hold it in place until the grout dries.
Q:Dye Numbers on tile!?
Just buy a bunch of cases and mix them all up. See if theres an arrow on the back of the tile so you have them all pointed in the same direction.
Q:Finding Cermaic Floor Tile patterns?
If you can get one tile to carry as your sample, then check stores that sell tiles. Doubt you will find them. Best bet is take sample to store that specializes in tile; they MAY have outdated tiles in their warehouse. Dig out some from area that could use contrast colors. Use pulled up ones (extra work to 'clean' back of old tiles) and replace the cracked/broken tiles. Use contrasting tiles around visible outside wall border or center of area. Now have 2 different colors but not replacing entire floor.
Q:how to measure and install ceramic tile counter tops and back splash?
I tile every day of my life, and might understand your confusion, but wonder of the type of HELP you need? On a countertop, my standard is 1/8th inch grout lines. Your issue depends in some part, on the size of the counter top and tiles you choose. Obviously on a floor, using 12 x 12 tiles, IF you went with a 1/8 grout line, you add an inch in floor measurement...loss/gain, for every 8 tiles set. Most effective for a backsplash and counter face is to include Bullnose and the reverse of that (the name escapes me) for where the counter meets the splash. The substrate should be molded to conform, but with adequate prep, you could fill. Certainly an ideal is for a counter top substrate to be exacly large enough to accomodate tile sizes, and grout lines, with no cutting. That's a rare occurance, unless it was preplanned. AND again depends on tile size. 2, 6, 9, 12, etc. and shapes in tile, IE: Octagonal Im my kitchen, my counter tops are 24 inches deep, to the wall. Using a 1/8 grout line, I'll have cuts to make, no matter the size of the tile, unless I find some that aren't exactly as stated. (Undersize) Glad to add if you wish, but wonder what type of Help exactly, you need. Steven Wolf
