- Rent a rug cleaner from your local hardware store, first pretreating the worst spots with a spot remover. And see what this does. Cause in any case you don't want to be breathing the stuff left in the carpet. If you own the place, I'd recommend pulling it up (in a corner or doorway), and seeing what is underneath. Or make a canvas painted rug to go over the area, buy a large canvas (dropcloth or the like) give it a basecoat, then your design and then a few coats of poly. Would be easier to clean up, and not as expensive if you decide to toss it.

- Our carpet has been great it has a stain guard so although a neutral colour we have no permanent marks. It wasn't a cheap carpet, I am not sure of the mix but isn't pure wool. I would think that the carpet selling places would be able to help as we stipulated that we wanted something stain/animal resistant. p.s. our very old dog has become incontinent so we have had alot of accidents lately, our carpet is a plain colour but with an indented square through it, so it gives off different shadings which helps with overall appearance.

- Hydrogen Peroxide that comes in the light proof brown plastic bottle, is 3%. It will do no harm as an additive for sanitation purposes, but may not be effective in breaking down dirt,soil, cooking oil particles, found in the carpet. Professional carpet cleaners who use the hot water carpet cleaning process, will use a 12% version to treat obvious pet urine stains. Taxidermists, I'm told, use a 20% version to soak animal skulls in to remove every thing from the bone. Use only 50% per cent of the recommended soap, as these toy machines are famous for leaving a sticky soap residue in the carpet that later will attract soil/dirt/dust to the traffic areas of the carpet. Professional carpet cleaners use citric acid products to help remove soap pre sprays from the carpet, to freshen it, and also to lower the PH of the carpet to a neutral level. If your carpet is seriously soiled and hasn't been cleaned for over a year, consider hiring a professional hot water carpet cleaner. Good Luck.

- The question is: how big of an area? If it is kinda small 3 x 3. You are going to have to do some surgery! First way: Find a spot of carpet that is good and hidden. Like in the corner of your closet. Take a really sharp knife ( utility knife works good here) and carefully cut out the burnt part. Then cut out the exact size piece in the hidden place. Swap the pieces out. Be careful to not cut into the padding under the carpet. Do not grab a good piece that is close to a seam (you'll just create more problems). You can glue the new carpet down with wood glue, just not too much. I hope that your carpet is thick, or this will not work. Also, you don't want the new piece getting sucked up in the vacuum cleaner. I really think you should just tell your mum though. You might get into a bit of trouble, but If she finds out that you did unqualified surgery on her carpet you are going to really be in a world of hurt!

- The rug is supposed to be protecting the floor. The exception is when you have cherry floors which darken from the sunlight. Then when you move a rug you have a much lighter area of wood where the rug was. Sometimes the backing from the rug may dull the floor but a quick clean up with soapy water will restore the finish shine. Good luck---

- spank your cat until it behaves..... Seriously you needed to put towels, to draw the oil out first thing. Keep doing that until there is none left to draw. Naptha as in Fels naptha or you might try lighter fluid....make sure you are well vented. A wet vac MIGHT do the trick as in the local carpet shampoo rental place. If all else fails call a pro. Obviously your concerns are an oil based product which might harm the dyes...or loosen them and anything else strong enough to attack the oil may be too strong for the dyes.... Oil lamps really should be kept in a safer place and used only as an aux light source when the electric goes out....open fire lighting has ALWAYS been dangerous....not trying to sound lecture like but over the years I have learned both candles and oil lamps are probably not a good thing in lieu of flashlites....not as romantic but far less likly to take out your entire house.
