- Q:I am having a problem with the wiring in my basement. What I am doing: I wired a new outlet box off of an old outlet box. From the new outlet box, I then wired a switch for a new light fixture. So the wiring goes; fuse box, outlet box, outlet box, switch, light. Well, I blew the fuse once I turned the new light on. (BTW, I had a buddy stop at lowes to pick me up a switch and he returned with a 3-way switch). I only need it to operate as a 2-way which I have figured out how to do from the internet. My question is, while testing the outlet boxes and switch after I blew the fuse, I found the I have continuity between the common and hot wire. Mind you the fuse has been removed. So how can I have continuity between the common and hot wires? Thank you.
- With respect, you have mis-wired somewhere. Old Outlet Box is A New Outlet Box is B Switch Box is C Light is D A (hot)--------------------------- B (hot) ------------------------------------ C / --------------- D (hot) A (neutral/common)-------- B (neutral) ---------------------------------------- D (neutral) A (ground) -------------------- B (ground)------------------------------ C (ground)------- D (ground) As to a 3-way switch, in the switch box, the hot goes to the copper-colored screw, the leg to the light goes to either of the brass-colored screws. The neutral goes straight through the switch-box. Only the HOT gets switched. The ground is connected to all three new devices but is continuous. If this is not crystal-clear, call an electrician.
- Q:I know that electrical resistance will decrease if you increase the cross-sectional area of the wirebut if that's the case, then why aren't wires made larger?? There must be some reason, some con to increasing the 'A'? I haven't touched Physics since high school, so I really don't remember. Thanks.
- The only exception to the excellent answers that have already been provided is in the case of radio-frequency (R.F.) currents. R.F currents are caused to 'crowd out' to the surface of the conductor. Consequently, the R.F. resistance of a conductor can be many, many times that of its d.c. resistance. There are two classic methods to combat this (undesirable) effect. One is to use Litz wire (look it up on the 'Net); the other is to use wire that is much thicker than what is required for the d.c. current that it passes, but the increased diameter of the wire produces a larger surface area - which is usually silver-plated, to reduce the R.F. resistance even further. Litz wire is usually used in the frequency range 100 kHz to 2 MHz; the silver-plating method is usually used in the frequency range 50 to 1000 MHz. .
- Q:explain?thank you veeery much :)
- Yep, about 90% of electrical power goes into heating (the heater is constructed for that, with high resistance wiring to get heat). The rest goes into visible light (glowing). For a light bulb electricity it is NOT efficient, about 90% is heat, which you do not want in that case, you just want the light
- Q:I have a water pump that is connected directly to the electrical panel in my home. I want to cut the wire, install two extension cord ends, and re-connect the wire. By doing this, I will be able to unplug the pump from the electrical panel and plug it into a generator when needed. My question is whether I need to pay attention to polarity when connecting the extension cord ends? If I get the wires reversed, will it cause a problem? I guess if I reverse the wires on both the male and female ends, it should work fine when connected to the electrical panel (because both the male and female are reversed, which should net to the same thing). I am concerned about when I plug the thing into a generator. If I accidentally switch the wires around the wrong way, what will happen?
- yes VERY IMPORTANT you could kill yourself using equipment with reversed polarity
- Q:I rent a home and the power started having really bad surges last night. I called my power company and he says their end is fine. The electrician inside says there is an issue with the wiring of some sort. Is the landlord responsible for thing that got fried like my cable box and my computer?
- a artwork pc And the Freegin element substitute into plugged right into a surge Protector to. yet i dunno what exceeded off, there substitute into an exceedingly loud thunderclap and the lights furniture flickered and once I went to bypass to artwork the subsequent morning and grabbed the Powerbook, It substitute into lifeless and wouldnt come returned on.
- Q:I have tried hot sauce. I have to cover all my wires with car wire covers.
- It's probably just a quirk for the cat. We have a Maine Coon that chews things as well.
- Q:Hi, I have a 60 year old house. While doing an addition, I discovered that the outlets were running from the panel, through the kitchen, to the living room, and then the garage. Was this the normal way to wire back then?? Every time I have the TV( living room), washer (garage), Frig and microwave (kitchen) on, the circuit breaker trips. I am doing the wiring for my new addition, and can put the living room and garage on a seperate circuit. Is this wise?? It sounds like a good idea, but I want to make sure. Thanks for your timepb4sc
- Yes, put the kitchen on its own circuit. Also put the lights on a separate circuit so that they stay on even if you trip the kitchen breaker. It's much safer that way.
- Q:Ihave a 19 gallon, electric, 120v water heater. Can I splice the two wires in it to an electrical cord that I can plug into a normal wall outlet? If so, can you tell me how, or direct me to a website which explains the process?
- Yes.But make sure the cord is heavy enough to carry the amperage that is required for the water heater. There's a plaque with the volts and amps on there some where. One amp equals 100 watts. Make sure and use a 3 prong plug and be sure and attach the ground to the frame of the heater. The other 2 wires should be color coded but it doesn't matter which way you attach those. Also, make sure the outlet you use has a large enough breaker to handle the load.
- Q:Is there any requirement that the cable will be placed in the wireway?
- Generally no problem as long as pay attention to do not use too much power of the electrical appliances like the total power that then install a leakage protection switch
- Q:Is in a meter, with a plug of the same things, and then passed in and out of the network signal, you can access the Internet, and this thing called what name, probably how far to pass, the new number will not be cut? Question added: the middle is not empty, about 200 meters distance, what to use? More
- Therefore, the inverter in the installation of the use of the control circuit must take anti-jamming measures
