Q:I'm curious, for those who have had solar panels installed on the rooves of their houses:How much did you pay? How much energy do the panels produce? Did it dramatically cut down on your electricity bill? Was it worth it? Thanks!
No, but if you have the money, go for it. In Germany, people get a government rebate (much like the Prius rebate our own government offered) and so you see solar panels everywhere. If the Obama administration pushes for a rebate for solar panels, you will see them here in the state. It's the initial cost that puts off most potential solar panel customers. Upkeep isn't too expensive, and they ultimatley pay for themselves. (after about a decade)
Q:Can solar panels be installed on satellites?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on satellites. In fact, solar panels are commonly used on satellites to provide them with a reliable source of renewable energy.
Q:Here's a little idea I though might help everyone out in Iraq a little: How about if the US mass produces solar panels that are small enough to carry (maybe one foot by three feet) that have a regular power outlet on them to the Iraqis? We could send convoys to the people waiting in line to buy gas and give each person one free solar panel. Why?. A lot of people are buying gas to run generators for air conditioning, not to fuel vehicles. 2. It would help reduce the gas lines if people only needed gas for cars instead of their generators too.3. It would help reduce the fighting over the power grid if people didn't need the grid for their own electrical power. My theory is, once every family in Iraq has enough of these panels that they don't even care about the power grid (during the daytime anyway) it would be much easier to fix the power grid. Maybe these solar panels could even connect to and add to the power grid.
In oil rich Iraq it would be counter productive to take such an initiative. There is already a huge shortage of solar panels. If you drive the price up more, which you're plan would do, It would just set back their growth in the U.S. and other developed oil poor places. This would hurt us a lot more than it would help them.
Q:So I want to power one of my car fans with some solar panels. I ordered quite a few and I want to power one of my fans under the hood. I've already disconnected the fan and pulled it out of the car to test it later. What all do I need besides the panels, fan, and wiring to make this work. This fan will not be tied to any other system. Currently, the fan is not operated by the car or any system of the car due to a modification made to the automobile allowing me to disconnect it from use months ago.Using the fan powered from the solar panels would help with the modification to increase air flow and speed into the area.Could someone please help me by telling me what else I need to make the fan operational from here?
You may not like it, but the answer's still the same. A car fan will draw anything from a few to several hundred watts, depending on which fan you're talking about (A/C, ventilation, cooling). A solar array will take up roughly one square meter to generate 00 Watts with the sun shining straight down onto it, so you'll need to cover (more or less) the entire roof (or hood) with solar cells in order to power that fan (minimum). If you still want to go ahead: Solar panels, Fuse, cables. Preferrably one cut-out diode per panel (in addition to the hopefully present internal diodes in the panels) in order to prevent one panle dumping its load into the next instead of into the fan. Much better option: get a low power fan (e.g a slow running computer fan) and connect it to that panel of yours. These fans make do with about 0 Watts (at a much lower air throughput), so you'll actually have a chance of running it from the solar panel without coverig your car in panels.
Q:Do solar panels require maintenance?
Yes, solar panels do require maintenance. Regular cleaning to remove dirt, dust, and debris is necessary to ensure optimal efficiency. Additionally, periodic inspections and maintenance checks are recommended to identify and address any potential issues such as loose connections, wiring problems, or shading that may affect performance. However, compared to other forms of energy generation, solar panels require relatively low maintenance efforts.
Q:I have 2 20 watt Solar panel. I have it hooked up to solar controller and batteries to inverter. Am trying to figure out how much watts am getting. I found the voltage but how do I find the amp reading on a mutimeter?
It is possible your meter does not have the capacity to safely measure more than 300 milliamps which is too small to measure current output from solar panels. Assuming no losses in the system or components, if your meter does not have the capacity to measure 0 Amps, you will need to get one that does. Analogs are better than digitial for this. Most often the 0 Amp circuit of the meter has a discrete positive plug location for the positive test lead. Most have a common ground connection with the rest of the meter functions. If you are measuring current at the battery in the charge mode- Negative lead of meter goes to positive terminal of battery and positive lead of meter goes to the cable that was connected to the positive terminal of the battery. Since the Wattage is a nominal measurement, if you measure between the panel and controller, take measurement on one leg of the panel, as you want to measure the current with the loaded active circuit. Meter is oriented the same way as the measurement at the battery would be made above only this time the meter is between the panel and controller. At peak solar conditions, expect current to be measured at 2.5 to3 Amps or more per panel. Under optimal conditions your panel will have higher output than their ratings indicate. Open circuit can be close to 20 volts. Never short circuit the output of the solar panels. It is volts multiplied by amps that gives you Watts.
Q:I have to get a lot of information on how solar panels are developed and distributed in America because I have to do two pages on this. Please help me get information in this I really need it!! Thankss...
The first link below is one of the best sites for recent news about solar panels. You should be able to find stories about solar panels under development today. A little bit of the history: Solar panels have been around for about 50 years now. They were first used to power spacecraft. Solar power for domestic use started to develop rapidly in the 970's during the first oil crisis, but as energy prices fell in the 980's solar development slowed. Most of the large solar panel makers were purchased by large oil companies who seemed not to be too interested in solar. In the late 990's as concerns about both Peak Oil and Global Warming grew there was renewed interest in solar power and a number of new companies were started to develop new kinds of solar panels. Many of these new companies have grown larger than the older solar companies still owned by big oil companies. Over the last 7 years or so growth in the solar market has been explosive with a compound growth rate of almost 40% per year. In 2005 the solar industry for the first time started to consume more silicon than all other electronic industries combined resulting in a world wide silicon shortage that is still with use. New silicon refineries are coming on line and the shortage is expected to diminish by 2008 or 2009. Check out the two links below. They will help you a lot.
Q:Can solar panels be installed in a shaded area?
Solar panels can still be installed in a shaded area, but their efficiency will be significantly reduced as they rely on direct sunlight to generate electricity.
Q:How do you know when it is a good deal to buy a solar panel. For example, what is a good cost per watt, how many volts should I expect, etc.
Both might be bigger. When it is cloudy and little solar (iciness) you'll have a breeze. When it is nonetheless and sunny, you could have the solar. When the batteries are charged, extra vigour from the windmill can also be shunted right into a resistance heater in a water tank, preheating home water, decreasing that price. Downside of windmills: There is a few noise. you do desire a tower of a few form to get above treeline. It's mechanical, so it's going to want periodic renovation and would possibly holiday, or will put on out, or be broken in a windstorm. Panels will final for many years, simply have to be wiped clean of snow within the iciness, and washed off, in case you are living in a dusty subject. They are hard, however the glass can also be damaged.
Q:Can solar panels be used to power a gas station?
Yes, solar panels can be used to power a gas station. Solar energy can be harnessed through the installation of solar panels on the roof or in the vicinity of the gas station. This renewable energy source can then be used to power various operations and equipment at the gas station, reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources and lowering overall operational costs.
